The heel is the most important part of the foot. When running, the person lands on this part of the feet which provides balance and safe support on landing. It also bears all the weight of the person.Like all body parts the heel is also prone to some defects and abnormalities. This condition is less harmful than other feet problems but is still problematic.Cracked heels are now considered to be the most common cause of foot disorders that are prevalent these days. Commonly known as fissures, these cracks develop generally deep inside the skin of the feet. This gives rise to thickening of the skin of the feet, causing deep pains and a tendency to bleed.

The symptoms that most commonly are suffered include the following;Hard skin growth at the outer edges of the skin. The affected area feels to be itchy. Skin may turn yellow or dark. Pain may also be experienced while walking, running or even standing. On use of open back shoes or shoes with thin soles may also aggravate pain. Peeling and cracking of the skin. Sometimes there appear areas with red patches or flakes on the affected area. Causes of cracked heels. The general causes of cracked heels may be diseased conditions, improper nutrition and water in the body.

Athlete's foot. Diabetes which leads to less sweating. Dry skin and if the skin is not supple and flexible, the incidence of 'cracks' are high may be due to any disease. Flat feet or High arched feet. Heel Spurs that are hooks of bone that can form on the heel bone. Improperly fitting shoes, Inactive sweat glands, Mal-alignment of the metatarsal bones, Obesity or being overweight increases the pressure on the heels thus cracking them. Prolonged standing e. g. at work, home and on hard floors, Psoriasis, Surgery to the lower extremities, Thyroid disease, Wearing shoes with an open back which allows the heel fat to move away into the sides and pressure on the cracks will increase.

Moisturizing cream should be regularly used for the moistening of feet to avoid cracks. There are many foot creams, lotions and ointments that can help to moisturize the dry skin of the feet. These may have Vitamin E, Shea butter and aloe Vera that are helpful as moisturizers for dry skin and cracks. Foot cream such as O'Keeffe's working feet cream that is non greasy, hypoallergenic, odorless and contains no oil or alcohol. Glycerin helps replenish the skin, while the skin protection is provided by the paraffin.
