Hoping to alter the events of the past, a 19th century inventor instead travels 800,000 years into the future, where he finds humankind divided into two warring races.
Alexander Hartdegen is a scientist and a inventor, who is determined to prove that time travel is possible. When the girl he loves is tragically killed, Alexander is determined to go back in time and change the path. Testing his theories, the time machine is hurtled 800,000 years into the future. He he discovers a terrifying new world. Instead of mankind being the hunter, they are now the hunted, with him stuck in the middle.
When Victorian scientist Alexander Hartdegen sees his fiancé murdered during a petty robbery, he throws himself into his work while all even his closest friends know is that he is doing nonsense research and physics. Four years later though and Alexander has created his machine – a time machine – that he plans to use to return to the fateful night and save his true love. Somehow he cannot do it though and, in despair, he drives himself forward into the future to find progress beyond his wildest dreams. This progress though, comes with costs and risks – both of which Alexander is very aware of as he moves into a world where mankind has changed beyond all recognition.

This film was wildly derided when it came out in the cinemas and I never bothered to go and see it, preferring to let time pass and pick it up for free on television in a few years. That time came recently and I watched a version of HG Wells' Time Machine that is loosely based on the source material. It starts with potential but all too quickly it becomes obvious and surprisingly heartless – almost making a conscious decision that the effects will be what people come for and that doing a solid job on those will be enough. Sadly that is not the case but, were it, the effects are already superseded and do not look as impressive as they once may have done. With the humanity and the emotion built into the story, the delivery is quite stiff and dull and I found myself surprised by how little interest I had it the story even when I was far into it. Not totally sure where the problems lie with this but script is certainly one of them (some of the dialogue and exposition is terribly clunky) while the overall production did appear effects driven.

It is a shame because Guy Pearce frequently offers more from his performance and his potential but the film never really takes him up on it and it leaves him isolated, trying to be a character in a film that would seem to just prefer an action hero. Mumba looks good (if you ignore that at times her face is chimp-like, and no it is not racist to say so) but she cannot act for toffee – she didn't even run and scream all that convincingly. God knows what about the film made Irons decide to do his poor character but he is not alone as other famous faces such as Bloom and Addey show up.

The Time Machine is not the awful film that some say but it is just very heartless and dull. Some of the effects are good and the plot did have potential but the script and design never let this come out, seemingly more interested in visual bang-for-buck than they were about producing an effective and engaging story. It takes a heck of a movie to get entire theaters to roar with laughter when an innocent young woman gets run over by a stagecoach, and this is that movie. It takes a heck of a screenwriter to write in a beautiful, young woman, the ideal of love across time and space and think, "Okay, so, their love is eternal, and he's come across the very fabric of reality for her, and they're staring adoringly at one another; it's about time she got knocked out of frame by a team of horses." It takes a heck of a director to shoot the scene where the man looks back at the woman with cathartic contentment and say, in the editing room, "Okay, great. That's the look of love and devotion I want, to drive him to do the impossible . . . now . . . cut it . . . there! Make it look like the buggy hits her like Lawrence Taylor after some crack! Excellent."

This movie offers all this and more. It has a woman in a full-length dress, corset, and bustle being run over by a stagecoach in a comically brutal fashion, and then it has a fairly poor science fiction movie. Pretty good, ya?

In conclusion, if you're a fan of brutal stagecoach blindsidings, where the driver doesn't flinch, the horses don't slow down, and the woman doesn't even see the one that gets her, this is the movie for you! I give it ten out of ten hoofprints! Weirdly disjointed and uncertain as to tone.
Following the shooting death of his girlfriend Emma (Sienna Guillory), New York scientist and professor Alexander Hartdegen (Guy Pearce) constructs a time machine able to transport him back in time in an attempt to prevent Emma's death. When she also dies in the new timeline, Alex realizes he can't alter the past and decides instead to go into the future to see whether answers might be found there. By mishap, he travels to the year 802,701 AD where he learns that the human race is divided into two factions: the peaceful cliff-dwelling Eloi and the monstrous, apelike subterranean Morlocks who eat them. When the Morlocks capture the only friend he's been able to make—the young and pretty Eloi Mara (Samantha Mumba)—Alex is faced with having to go underground to save her. The Time Machine is a remake of the 1960 classic, The Time Machine (1960), both of which were adapted from an 1895 novella, also titled The Time Machine, by English science fiction writer H.G. Wells [1866-1946]. The screenplay for the movie was written by American screenwriter John Logan. The main character was named George in the original movie. In the book, however, he was only referred to as "the time traveler." The Über-Morlock (Jeremy Irons) is referencing mankind as a whole. Man's constant need to advance itself ultimately became its undoing, which came in the form of the moon colony destroying its inner core and setting up the conditions that forced humanity to split into Eloi and Morlock. Because Vox (Orlando Jones), the Photonic Sphere built in 2030 AD, still exists and works. From it, the Eloi would have learned English. Mara speaks English so well because she teaches it to the Eloi. It might be assumed that the Über-Morlock knows English because of his telepathic ability to reach the minds of the Eloi. In the novel, however, the time traveler was unable to communicate with either the Eloi or the Morlocks, except by signs. Nobody spoke English. Alex successfully escapes from the Über-Morlock by hurling the time machine forward to the year 635,427,810 AD where he finds only a desolate valley overrun with Morlocks. Haing found the answer to his question—he cannot save Emma because it was her death that caused him to build the time machine, so by saving her, the machine would never have existed—he decides to return to the cave, rescue Mara, and alter the future. After releasing Mara, he jams his watch into the machine's controls and sets it working. The result is an explosion that reaches throughout the Morlocks' network of tunnels. Now, however, Alex is trapped in the year 802,701, so he sets forth to build a new life with Mara and Kalen (Omero Mumba). Vox is put to work reading stories and teaching English to the Eloi. The screen then splits in two, showing on the right Alex walking with Mara and Kalen through a field that was once Alex's home and on the left Philby (Mark Addy) and Mrs Watchit (Phyllida Law) strolling through the same area as it exists in 1903. Since Alex has disappeared, Philby asks Mrs Watchit whether she would be willing to become his housekeeper, at least until Alex returns, and Watchit agrees. The camera then pans around Alex's study, stopping at a view of the street outside the window. Philby walks past and tosses his bowler away. Yes. The Time Machine is in the public domain and may be read and/or downloaded from several online sites such as Project Gutenberg.
