Running Or Walking - Which is Better For Your Health?

To run, or not to run; that is the question. Whether t'is healthier to   30x30 Total Transformation Review  ambulate at an accelerated pace with both feet leaving terra firma simultaneously, or decelerate, leisurely, with one foot always planted on solid ground. To walk. To relax, enjoy. And so to be.

With apologies to Will, this is the discussion that currently resounds in health circles. Should we still be encouraging people to take up jogging as the only form of effective healthy exercise, or can we promote walking as a safe and enjoyable alternative?

Little more than a decade ago, there was no such argument. Jogging was all the rage - the only rage - if good health was to be the outcome. Fun runs abounded and Monday morning worksite chats often centred around 10km or marathon times and the aching muscles resulting. Now the streets are full of much less intensive ambulators; walkers, thinking that this is both a necessary and sufficient activity for health. But can both be correct?

The simple answer is 'yes'. Both running and walking are good forms of exercise - and both better than doing nothing - but with varying degrees of risks and benefits. As the runners of the 70's and 80's will tell you (and I'm one of them), jogging can be a dangerous past-time; not because of any risk of sudden injury, such as in football or car racing, but because of the effects of long term and continual jarring. Niggling injuries like tendonitis, knee soreness, ankle stiffness and back pain are the certificate of participation of the long distance runner.

Initially it was thought that a lifetime of such jarring would lead to permanent damage to musculo-skeletal tissue resulting in an increase in such ailments as arthritis. Now it's known that this is not the case. In fact arthritis is likely to be lessened in those who have lead an active life. It is more likely to be increased in those sports where acute injuries are more common. Other forms of chronic muscular problems are not unusual however, particular in someone who does not have perfect symmetry between limbs, or whose running style is not perfect.
