The new site “Red Town 166” includes office buildings in former workers’ houses, art galleries, boutiques and sculptures at 166 Hami Road near Beixinjing Station on Metro Line 2.

The site was previously owned by the Shanghai No.4 Experimental Instrument Co, a leading light of the prosperous Beixijing industrial hub in the 1980s.

Before the renovation, buildings were used as a temporary dormitory and warehousing.

Red Town 166 gathers companies involved in the arts and creative industries alongside education and recreation with the intention of becoming an open, actively public community.

Most of the industrial buildings have been preserved.

The iconic red brick of Red Town has been widely used.

Red Town creative park on Huaihai Road W. was converted from the former Shanghai No. 10 Steel Factory into a home for art galleries, cafes, exhibition spaces and offices.

It won plaudits for regenerating an old industrial area, but it closed in July 2017 to make way for further development.
