The media is always flooded with information about the dangers of high cholesterol. PhysioTru Review If you have been diagnosed with high cholesterol levels it important that you understand what cholesterol is and how to go about lowering it. Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in the cells of all animals. It is transported by blood plasma and an essential component of all cells. It is necessary for the production of hormones, vitamin D and is an important part of bile acids used to digest fat. Although necessary in small quantities, an excessive amount of cholesterol can cause health problems.

High amounts of cholesterol result in the formation of plaque which is a hard substance that builds up on the walls of arteries. Plaque buildup causes a narrowing of blood vessels which in turn leads to heart disease. Plaque can eventually form total blockages of important heart vessels resulting in a heart attack.

What causes high cholesterol? Diet plays an important role. Eating foods high in saturated fat will increase cholesterol levels. But diet alone is not always the culprit. Studies show that heredity can play a big part. High cholesterol seems to run in families. Other factors such as age, gender, exercise and overall health play a part too.

The key to lowering cholesterol is a combination of both drugs and diet. Eating a healthy diet and properly taking prescription medications can lower cholesterol levels and reduce health risks. The American Heart Association recommends limiting cholesterol intake to 300 milligrams a day. They also recommend quitting smoking. Exercise in even small amounts can help lower cholesterol by lowering blood pressure and helping to control weight.
