Probably the zaniest rhythm game you'll come across for a while. Check out my video at 03:11 for an overview of Double Kick Heroes.. I cannot heap enough praise onto this game. Played it for the first time today on stream, and finished on Hard Rock mode up to Europe, and if I were to take issue with anything it's that I doubt there's ever going to be enough to satisfy my craving for content in this tremendous title. Yes, I received this from the devloper, but I am absolutely not one to praise a product for any reason other than me loving it. The music rocks. The writing is funny and engaging, the characters are great, there are a ton of great hidden references.. As a fan of rhythm games I've been looking forward to this one since I saw the game jam version. This version (Early Access at this time) truly demonstrates the depth of the concept though. It might have fewer buttons than Rock Band, but the key decision to give you the choice of which drum to beat is what elevates the game to that rare level of being simple to pick up but extremely difficult to master. The combo system, the weapon upgrades, it all combines to make you want to get better and better. The presentation is incredible, first class pixel art, properly metal metal in the music and I was surprised (and pleased) to see a story mode added, even though the heart of this game is the rhythm bit.. Double Kick Heroes is the shmup that made me wish I had better rhythm. The gameplay boils down to the same well-timed button presses youd usually see in a rhyhtm game but there are enough touches to make this feel like more than a music game with a shmup skin. Lining up your shot is a challenge in itself you have to steer your car up and down and the button presses correspond with weapons that are placed in different locations on the car. There is enough variety in enemy design, so far, that you have to account for whats happening on the shmup half of the screen while staying on beat. The big selling point for me has been the presentation. In addition to the attractive pixel art, I love the world thats been built around the in-game music. Each track has fun metadata like the song titled SURPRISE! YOURE UNDEAD! with a genre of Mikes Delight Rock. Some of my favorite genre names were: Beach metal, Tenacious Rock and Y2kore. Elmobo appears to be the composer of Double Kicks soundtrack and it sure is excellent. Through my research, I learned he worked on the Nightmare Creatures OST which was also impressive. Definitely check out Double Kick Heroes for a fun, well polished experience. To start things off, I have never played a rhythm game like Rock Band or Guitar Hero, so I don't have a crazy drum setup or guitar to help me out. All I had was a classic XBox controller and old man hands. I had an AMAZING time playing Double Kick Heroes. The music was top notch, the story wasn't horrible, and all the METAL references in game had me pumping a fist in the air to almost every song. Iconic metal musicians, Danny Trejo as Metalchete, and machines guns coming out of the back of a Cadillac to fight off hoards of zombies and rabid chickens. What more could you want in a game. How about a mecha T-rex? Yeah. they got that! I sucked at this game.. Hoo boy, where do I start. Okay, so, this literally has to be one of the best rhythm games I've ever played, or one of the most fun ones at any rate. It starts off as one of your typical rhythm games, hitting a note at the right time to score points, but with a twist; your bass-pedal notes actually fire off bullets at zombies chasing you down a road, from two different spots. The better you play, the higher your multiplier will go, and the stronger your bullets will become (i.e. Start off with a pistol, upgrade to a shotgun, and then to cannons), though depending on what difficulty you're on, messing up will reset your multiplier and revert you back to pistol bullets. Anywho, that's the basic gameplay of it, but going further down the difficulty line introduces multiple tracks with different triggers, for example, playing on Metal difficulty, a few songs down, you're not just hitting the bass pedal notes, you're hitting the snare drum notes as well in order to 'charge up' hand grenades, although missing these notes isn't as punishing as missing the bass pedals. Going even further down the difficulty will introduce cymbals as well, so you'll actually feel like you're a heavy-metal drummer, but be warned, as this game can get EXTREMELY difficult if you're not paying attention to everything, and it's very easy to get overwhelmed on the higher difficulties. The music itself is friggen amazing; ESPECIALLY if you love metal If you don't, then why are you even here? , and it includes multiple different sub-genres. You start off with some rock tracks (with some low-key, very satisfying chiptune noises during some parts, complimenting the pixelated graphics), then slowly progress to the heavier songs/genres, and playing along with the rhythm of these songs is extremely satisfying. You can also mess with some of the 'hit sounds' should you desire. There are also boss battles in this game, ranging from a giant shark mini-boss, to a giant monstrosity (I'm not going to spoil anything, you need to see it for yourself), which involves steering up and down the screen to dodge their attacks, resulting in an interesting battle overall, though I've seen speculation that steering up and down may eventually be removed (It's difficult as-is playing the game on its own, so when you have to hit notes and dodge attacks at the same time, once again, it can become very overwhelming). Because it's early access, there isn't -too- much stuff to do, but for the current price, I'd say it's definitely worth it, especially with the higher difficulties adding multiple tracks, so if you manage to master a song, try playing it under a harder difficulty to keep yourself further entertained. More tracks and story will be added later, as well as the option for custom songs (There are some right now, but you just need to supply the audio file). 9/10, definitely one of the best rhythm games
