The idea might have been a good one but it turns out that the execution was another thing entirely. The car designed around ramming doesn't really click since ramming is ♥♥♥♥ed and rarely does anything, all the missions are timed, which really doesn't work when you can go up to a minute without seeing any enemies, and the way you control your car is more fiddly than an actual car.
Hired OP is basically useless because Form up is a janky thing, and the missiles are very RNG on if they are actually going to hit the guy twenty foot in front of you or just spazz out and go wherever.. Man this game is sweet. Was waiting literally years for this to release and I am not disappointed. The only thing that would be better for me would be if the game was completely turn based, but what we have is good enough to satisfy those looking for a chunky tactical game that scratches that Car Wars itch. The "EZ Drive" feature is unique and gives you enough control without being too overwhelming, and when the action ramps up in a mission you will be frantically trying to figure out who to attack next, or how best to position your car so you can take out multiple guys at once. Also, the varied missions add a decent amount of variety while the progression of the various challenges always gives you something to work toward. Tabletop purists might be a little turned off by the real time aspects of the game, but if you can get over that, its a great time that keeps you wanting to play just one more mission until its 2am and you wonder where the time went.. I got this for 25% off, and after playing I think that's the correct price point, but I don't think you'll be disappointed at full price either.
The bullet time feature made the game for me. I have no reflexes to speak of, and hitting spacebar gives me plenty of time to assess the situation and hopefully make the right moves.
There are a lot of moves to make as you juggle speed, lane changes, weapon cooldowns, abilities, etc. Again, the bullet time (+ hotkeys) gives you time to think, and the decisions aren't that complicated. The missions have you do varied stuff to complete them (of course they all feature cars blowing up).
The game has crashed on me a couple times, so there's that.
So if you're old like me and want an action-y, explody, shooty game where you have time to decide what to do,, this is it.. I was a child when i saw dark future in a store, alas i never got to play it... so I jumped at the chance to play the video game adaption of it. As far as how close to the board game it is, I dont really know but I can tell u its a fun ride for an acceptable price point. Graphics r decent, nothing mindblowing but when u slow down the action and zoom around with the mouse it looks sexy. Audio is decent too though i would've liked a lot more banter between drivers (maybe over a vox or somethin) but ive only played a few hours so maybe there is sum of that in boss fights later on in the game. Gameplay is where this title shines though, being rogue-like there is replay value in the different antagonists u can be. Each story comes with its own set of parameters and nuances. It reminds be a bit like Galax-Z's style. Difficulty is fine, just remember to slow down the action at critical times to maximise your damge and defense. The game runs fine on my I5 1060 gtx, a couple of hiccups but nothing major considering at the of writing this the game has just been released. I truly hope there will be sum more content for the game wateva form that takes, I'll be a happy camper... :). 2 hours played including all the first scenario.
Like many GW PC adaptations, although the setting and ambience is spot on, the gameplay is repetitive, with very limited vehicle setups. Absent are aspect of the boardgame such as different vehicle types and plenty of options for weapon mounting locations. Equipment via the shop is scarce, I suppose that's trying to fit the post-apocalyptic setting, but one of the things I was looking forward to was designing my vehicle from brakes, tyres and armour types and minutiae of weapon selection, balancing weight and engine with perofrmance. I get little of interest to buy apart from items to make armour or weapons a little better.
Roads seem to be always 4 lanes, no way to turn around (not that there's much reason to), no hint of the handling risks or planning your drive from the original.
I like that retro font, but the graphics overall are disappointing.
Sadly it plays like an 80s joystick arcade game, not a 2019 new development. 6/10 at best, get it on sale for an evening's play. I'll play more, but after an hour or so it gets dull, fast.
Update - also crashed just as I was picking a mission.
Update after a couple more hours, some improvements in payouts and equipment available, but no change to gameplay apart from occasional mutators on missions.
Further update - after a couple more hours into a run, it says my save is out of date and I have to restart. Great. 3/10.. It's like a tactical version of road redemption. it's very cool. This game has so much potential unfortunately it comes up a bit short.
In it's current state it is repetative and once you play through a certain missiontype you've pretty much seen all that that kinds of mission has to offer.
And there's like 6 different kinds of mission totally.
You play different characters locked in a season and the only replay value lies within unlocking perks and new characters without the option to create your own driver. And once you're done with a season that's it. Start a new season with a new character and so on..
If the devs would add the option to create your own driver, build your own car, create your own gang, maybe add missions where you could take over (and had to hold) different strategic points, fuel etc and so on this game would be awesome but unfortunately it delivers none of that.
It's beeing praised for it's strategic elements but the only strategy is where to have your car placed, when to use boost and when to brake and what enemy you should DPS. Oh and ofc, how to outfit your car.
The game looks beautiful and runs smooth but in it's current state it's just shallow and repetative.
I wanted this to be so much more than it was.. 100 % sure this is not for everyone...
but if you like rogue-like game mechanics, car combat and tactic games, you should give it a try.
i like if devs make games with mechanics outside the box, even if it is not perfect or comfortable. so they nailed it with good ideas.
it's not a game to get sunken, but for now and then doing 1 or 2 runs (like mostly all rogue-like games) a good choice. not the hardest game in my libary, but far from easy...
not for casual mainstream gamers, but indylovers and hardcore gamers will mostly like it and should give it a try. it's worth it...
