Meereen is under siege and the fleet of the masters is attacking the city. Daenerys wants to destroy their cities but Tyrion convinces her to not incur in the same mistake of her father in King's Landing. They schedule a meeting with the masters to discuss the terms of surrender. However the masters misunderstand and believe Daenerys want to surrender. She rides Drogon and together with the two other dragons, they burn part of the fleet. Meanwhile Daario and the Dothraki attack the Sons of the Harpy. Then Yara and Theon team up with Daenerys to accept the independence of the Iron Isles and to overthrow Euron. In Winterfell, Jon Snow, Sansa, Davos and Tormund meet with Ramsay, and Jon Snow proposes a dispute between them instead of sacrificing lives in a battle. Ramsay does not accept and they schedule the battle in the morning. Jon Snow plots a scheme with Davos and Tormund and Sansa warns that Ramsay plays dirty. When both armies are ready to battle, Ramsay brings a surprise that affects Jon and his army. Who will win the bloody battle?
Expectations for this episode were sky-high and nearly could be satisfied. We saw an epic battle sequence (or rather two), we had moments of great cinematography (and for the ones who like it) there was a lot of blood and gore in it.
So it's a real shame that the writers were not able to get the story on eye level with Miguel Sapochnik's great directing. I would say everything in this episode happened as expected (Littlefinger helping Sansa/Jon out, Ramsay dying, Rickon dying, Greyjoys making a pact with Dany). And of course Ramsay killing Wun Wun instead of Jon when he had the chance to...what is to much Hollywood for GoT in my eyes.
This is unfortunately a development we see the last 3 to 4 episodes...no surprises in favor of rushing a story line to an expected end (see Arya). Stunning, absolutely stunning. Left shaking at the end of the episode, as well as having palpitations, I have never ever wanted someone to die as much as Ramsey Bolton. And to FINALLY see Sansa Stark carry out her revenge, for once receiving justice in the whole entire series, the end scene just put into practice how bold and calculating Sansa Stark may have become. I swear, the whole show was leading up to that moment, with Jon Snow finally avenging his house and his family honor and his rightful claim to the North. I shall even dare to say that this may have even surpassed Breaking Bad's Ozymandias as the greatest television episode of all time. In addition, the ambiance of battle was captured so perfectly with every nitty gritty detail adding up as a collective to this overall immersion. And to see Ramsey Bolton get a taste of his own medicine, with the loyalty of his dogs succumbing to the brutality of hunger, the irony (since Ramsey was going to use the dogs to murder the Starks) left me even more satisfied.
