With a little research and a little thought, you can choose the yoga mat that fits your level, your lifestyle and your budget.

You can buy the basic foam mat. These mats are generally made of PVC and tend to be the cheapest yoga mat on the market. They are durable, easy to wash and can be found in many varieties. These kinds of mats can also be used as camping pads. If you are a green person, these are not the most environmentally friendly.

Sticky mats are very common and great for those just starting. They often have symbols on them which indicate proper positioning of your feet and hands when doing yoga poses. This is a great tool for those just beginning to learn about yoga and the various poses. Sticky mats are very light, reasonably durable and can be toted around easily. You can find double thickness sticky mats which provide more cushion for those who enjoy a more active form of yoga.

Rubber mats are another type of popular yoga mat. These can cost a little more but they have more cushion and can be more comfortable to practice on. They also come in different colors and thicknesses. They are not the perfect choice for using outdoors as the sun can cause them to break down and peel.

Another good type of mat is one made from natural fibers like cotton and hemp. These also come in many varieties of sizes, colors and thicknesses. They are great to use because they absorb moisture and sweat. Practicing on these can be safer since they do not get slippery due to moisture. When placing them on a hard floor, be careful because they may slide.

On occasions when it is difficult to bring a mat with you, you can also use just the floor. Every once in awhile, no mat works as well as a mat. The floor is not recommended for everyday use as a mat adds to your comfort and safety. However, it's free to use the floor and you do not have to carry it with you.

Substitutes for yoga mats include yoga mitts. These are also called yoga paws. These are mittens for your hands and feet so you can do yoga without a mat. They are very useful for those who travel and they come in a variety of sizes. They do tend to slip when you sweat so you should be careful of that. People who travel a lot can also buy travel mats. They are lightweight and easy to fold and carry.
