Once we get the big post-college "job," our evolvement is supposed toAwaken the Species Review come to a standstill. Yes, we are supposed to make more money and move up the ladder. Buy property and have children. But there is some type of expectation that in terms of career, your fate is now cast. You are supposed to identify the ideal job in your early 20's and do it until you're six feet under. What if you want to quit your job as a plumber and become a hypnotherapist at age 48?

I believe that the universe sometimes pushes us out of the nest, to correct an imbalance we have between certainty and love. The need for certainty is driven by scarcity. There is a hidden assumption that whatever else might come will be worse. So, many of us stick with "certain mediocrity" than go for something we love. It has to get really bad before we actively look to make a change, rather than asking, "this is great, but how can I find an even more authentic way to express my gifts? How can I live in an even more appealing part of the country? How can I have an even greater abundance of close relationships?

I live in the capitol of California where there is a plethora of state workers. I am always puzzled when people say, "Yeah, well, I hate my job with the state, but there's so much job security." How does security count on the plus side if you hate the job? What would you say if a psychic told you, "I see you in a job that you will really hate, but it will only be temporary. Oh wait no, good news, it's for 25-30 years! High-five! Party time!"

When I coach clients who have been laid off, or transitioning out of a job, what I see is that the universe needed them to release attachment to a false self or move into a career that allows them to express their gifts. In fact, they usually also know that they needed to pave a new path or say "yes" to something they really love, but the certainty and "perfection" from the outside perspective was too seductive - and they ignored their inner guidance. Being laid off isn't a failure, it's the universe's way of saying, "ohhhh... so you're a stubborn one, aren't ya?"
