Using the Mind-Muscle Connection to Your Advantage

Do you ever see people in theScience Based Six Packgym just going through the motions every time they work out, and you never see their body composition improve even after months (or even years) of training? It's not because they've been cursed with poor genetics, or because of some supernatural occurrence that transcends our reality. The truth of the matter is actually quite simple: it is because they are not dialed in to the task at hand, or even in tune with the muscles involved in moving the resistance placed in front of them. They have a lack of focus and likely aren't aware of a concept called the "mind-muscle connection," which is greatly responsible for the results you will (or won't) get from your efforts.

The body is only as strong as its weakest link in the kinetic chain, which is made up of your brain and nerves, your muscles and your skeleton. Your brain is the epicenter of all movements because the command to move the muscle which in turn moves the bone as you intend all stems from electrical impulses from your brain. If your mind isn't focused on movement, how can you expect your muscles to move your body around?

Your mind is a strong catalyst for building your dream body. That mental image of what you how you want your body to look and perform, if focused on during your workouts, will activate your muscles as if your mind was stretching and squeezing them directly-which really isn't that far from the truth. Every movement you make involves one or more of your muscles performing flexion (muscle shortening), while the opposing muscle(s) are performing extension (muscle lengthening), so by using your mind to "stretch" (extend) or "squeeze" (flex) the muscle you can manipulate your body to literally push and pull its way to success!

Let's put this in perspective; you don't get strong, muscular legs simply by getting up out of a chair and sitting back down countless times during the day (even though you in fact do these actions throughout the day) do you? Of course not, and that's because you're not focused on using your muscles for a specific adaptation... you're simply performing the movement subconsciously. The adaptation most people are looking for in fitness is an increase in lean body mass. In order to achieve this adaptation, you need to combine relatively heavy (but safe) loads with a strong focus on the mind-muscle connection with every repetition you perform. Try it out for yourself and see the difference in your workouts!
