The Importance of a Positive Attitude in Your Workout

I'm sure you've all heard people talking30x30 Total Transformationabout the benefits of a positive mental attitude at some point, be it at work or school, someone has told you to always think positive and good things will happen for you. To all of this I reply... bullsh*t. Having a positive attitude is important, but it is just one small piece of the puzzle when it comes to your workout routine. Regardless if your goal is just to drop a few pounds or become the next Mr. Olympia, you have to have get into the right mental state. Along with a positive mental attitude, you also need focus, determination, and most importantly... discipline. That's the bad news. The good news is that you can build these traits just like you can build a body.

You wouldn't walk into a gym on day one and put 800lbs up on the squat rack and try to lift, so don't make the mistake of putting too much pressure on yourself to start with. You need to accept certain inalienable truths; you will at some point miss a goal, you will inevitably cheat on your diet at some point, and the most frequent, you will "skip" workout days. I'm not saying this as an insult or to impugn your work ethic, I'm simply stating facts, it's going to happen. Knowing that it's going to happen will help you identify when you are slipping up, fix the problem, and then move on.

Set small, reasonable goals and build from there. Success breeds success, so set yourself up to succeed. Part of success is reward, don't forget to reward yourself when you hit your goals, it's the quickest way to condition your mind to do what you want it to do. For example, let's say your goal is to get up and go for a run every morning for a week. If you accomplish it, maybe your reward can be getting to sleep in one day. I'm not suggesting you go overboard with the goal/reward system to start with, but keep in mind "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy". Don't forget to give yourself something to look forward to or your mind will soon get tired of all the extra work and start to undermine your efforts, and since the mind controls the body, that will lead to problems.

Remember that nothing good comes easy, and while it's not the only thing you need, having a positive mental attitude can go a long way to helping you in your workouts and getting you the body you've always wanted. I always tell people "a positive attitude alone cannot build a great body, but a negative attitude alone can sure as hell destroy one."
