The Benefits Of Going Green And Why You Should Too

But his father did not allow black visitors to enter through the front door. Jimmy disagreed with his No BS Manifesting Course Review  father. So, he finally left home, for the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, in the summer of 1943 despite his parents' disapproval. He was not quite 19. The escape brought with it its own problems. At the Naval Academy, Carter wasn't a good student. His leadership grades were poor. He graduated in 1946 without any top honors. During the first two years of his career as a commissioned officer (1946-1948), he faced an especially difficult battle with depression: he began to doubt his ability to become a leader.

Over the Christmas holidays of 1950-1951, he had again an argument with his father on the issue of race. It was the last and most bitter argument between them. Two years passed without visits or real communication between the two. And early in 1953, his father was diagnosed with cancer, and in July he died. Over the determined opposition of his wife Rosalynn Smith, whom he had married in 1946 immediately after his graduation (he was 21 then, she was 18), Carter resigned his commission in the navy and returned to take up where his father had left off.

But things were not as he expected. There wasn't enough estate of his father for him to inherit. He acquired only a peanut warehouse, but no house to live in. So he was obliged to move his family into the government-subsidized apartments for the poor. The family now consisted of three children: Jack, James, and Jeff. This poverty-level situation lasted from 1954 to 1956. Then, however, things began to become surprisingly good: Carter had now -from the warehouse- an income that was almost twice the salary he had had in the navy, and he was therefore comfortable financially for the first time in his life. By 1957, the Carter family no longer had to live in public housing.

Also, Carter's desire to be a leader was progressively to be fulfilled. In 1962, he surprised even his wife by announcing publicly that he intended to qualify for election to the state senate - an election that he finally won. During his four years at the state senate (1962-1966), Carter worked very hard, and was respected by many of his colleagues. And when he announced in 1966 his intention to run for governor of Georgia, he was in a very good position to win. Money was no longer a problem for Carter -he was now rich, his warehouse was now a multimillion-dollar business.
