Superman 3 perhaps the best part of Superman series left a deep impression on me ever since it appeared on the big screen! As a kid it was hard for me to completely understand the plot, but as I grew older I was beginning to see the real value of the film! First of all I'd say that Annete O'Toole is definitely best possible replacement for Margot Kidder and I think she should have played in all four installments! The same goes for Robert Vaughn! They are both much more serious than Margot Kidder and Gene Hackman who played childish, stupid and naive characters all the way from the start! Also the whole idea of having an evil Superman for a change is the most original one if you ask me! In other parts it's very obvious who is against who and it doesn't require much brain to figure out the plot! But Sup 3 is full of original tricks (like the one with Pisa tower)! I agree that film asks for a little patience from the watchers, because there are many scenes of conversation and other stuff where Sup does not appear, but film also contains some really romantic scenes that just can't be seen in other parts! Not to mention the scenes with evil Superman hitting the tanker and spilling the oil or the one at a car junkyard! All these scenes are very unique and you won't see them in other parts! I would give this film all 10 stars!
It's obvious as soon as SUPERMAN 3 starts that not a lot of thought has gone into the screenplay of this movie , I mean the opening sequence is taken up by an unlikely sketch of someone paying attention to a sexy blond , not looking where they're going then BANG all sorts of mayhem ensues . It's like watching a very tired episode of THE BENNY HILL SHOW and seeing Bob Todd in a walk on part does nothing to help this feeling

You could claim that the producers are more to blame than the screenwriters David and Leslie Newman because the previous two entries were somewhat disjointed plot wise and those previous movies were written by that guy who wrote THE GODFATHER but even so this sequel is the worst written of the first three movies in the series where we get two different plots competing for screen time and needless disasters that call for Superman to save the day every ten minutes . Notice too that main villain Robert Webster has cruel put downs involving innuendo like " Get a hold of your self - because no one else will " . Very witty , except all the characters in this movie seem to be able to spout these type of crude witticisms indicating that the writers are incapable of writing idiosyncratic dialogue for the characters in this movie This is not a very good effort, seeming tired without being emotional. It looks like the end of the line...Superman III never flies as it should, or only does momentarily. [31 July 1983, p.21]
Whether or not Clark & Jimmy's trip to Smallville would be a business expense is not explained in the film, that is, in light of the fact that Clark mentions he's doing a story on his high school reunion.

However, if they'd flown then Clark wouldn't have been on hand to stop the chemical fire they encounter. On a plane, it would've been much more difficult for Clark to suddenly leave (he'd probably detect the fire somehow, say super-smell or his super-vision) the plane w/out anyone noticing.

Then again, Jimmy & Clark might have flown to a major city near Smallville first & then boarded a bus from the airport to Smallville itself.

In Superman IV, the new owner, David Warfield asks Clark why there were no travel expenses for him and he responds that he gets airsick which I assume he has said before since you never actually see "Clark" fly. Not really. When Gus gets the composition readings from the satellite's scan of a kryptonite meteorite, there's an element that doesn't correspond to anything in Earth's periodic table of elements & therefore couldn't be reproduced in the lab. So Gus, probably thinking he'd be scolded by Webster, entered "tar" as the unknown compound. When the completed compound was given to Gus after being manufactured in the lab, it turned out to be "fake" kryptonite which didn't have the total effect on Superman they'd intended. Instead of killing him it altered his personality, which did have it's benefits, allowing Webster to begin his plan to control the United States' oil supply.

As well, although this is not true Kryptonite, its effects are similar to that of Red Kryptonite. Red Kryptonite has numerous different effects on Superman. At times, in the comics and in the CW show Smallville, Red Kryptonite has altered Superman's personality in numerous ways. It is either a continuity issue, or a different power, which it could be as we never see the actual beam going from his eyes.
