About This Game

Solstice is a very retro wargame, heavily inspired by the classic games Lords of Midnight, Doomdarks Revenge and Sorderon's Shadow. Solstice is not a remake of any of these games but takes its lead from these games to develop a new gaming challenge for lovers of turn-based, menu driven strategy. Displayed using hand-drawn artwork, and using a pseudo-3D technique, often referred to as landscaping, which echoes the games of the time.

Set in the mythical land of Dourfrost, a land, trapped in an eternal winter, a land of fantastic beasts, magic and war,

Explore and battle across an open world, populated with 11 different mythical races (at launch), and well over a hundred and twenty characters, each with his or her likes, dislikes, needs, aims, desires and loyalties that shape the game and conflicts to come.

On release, Solstice will feature one very challenging, turn-based scenario, offering many hours of game-play.

The Rise of the Demon King.

While the lords and ladies of Dourfrost have squabbled over petty disputes and brokered and broken pacts and alliances, a dark power has been rising in the south. A power that will shake the entire land and threatens to overwhelm all that stands before it, and enslave everyone in its path.

Sator Grimward, a dark sorcerer, once thought long defeated, has risen again and united the tribes of the Ice Guard. Can Calith, king of the free folk muster the lords and ladies of Dourfrost, and overcome old bitterness, to bring a force of Freefolk, Dwarfs, Fey, Sidhe, Giants, and 6 other races together to defeat the rising storm.

JimJams games are a small, indie development team with a love for the retro games of the '80s and '90s. We only develop games that embrace that era, aiming to provide true classicly styled gaming, with a massive retro feel, maybe with a slight hint of what these games would have been with a little more processing power.

We don't aim to develop AAA games, but simply to bring our passion for a time gone by to those who love truly classic themed and inspired games. If this is a genre and era that you love, then our games are for you. 7aa9394dea

I rarely play Visual Novels. I've dumped most of them half way trough. And the fact that I played this trough AND pursued additional endings... I'd say thats a pretty darn good visual novel in my books. Enjoyed it thoroughly. Good stuff, would recommend

Also,, just a hint... If you're into writing that doesnt neccessarily result in a happy endings but still feel satisfying, this is for you.. Before I started playing Solstice, I mused to myself: I sure hope the developer gives a nod to their previous game Cinders somewhere within this game. Even a small Easter Egg would have been great. But I just thought that any developer worth their salt would incorporate a reference to their prior masterpiece.

Well I only had to play Solstice for 5 minutes and "Bam!", MoaCube delivered on my wish: a huge reference to Cinders. Very well done. I won't tell you what it is, but it's pretty cool. So that's why even though I've only played this game for 13 minutes, I already knew 8 minutes ago that Solstice deserves a Thumbs Up.

I still have 99% of this game left to play, and I can't wait to see if there are any more tie-ins from Cinders. My fingers are crossed that the developer will surprise me again and somehow have my favorite character, Sophia, make a cameo. If that happens, I'll gift a copy of Solstice to a random member of my friends list.

In short:
MoaCube is not just a developer or a publisher, MoaCube is a genre. There are thousands of games on Steam, but none of them compare to Cinders or Solstice. If you're looking for an immersive visual novel where your decisions really matter, then look no further than either of these two category-defining games.

The highly detailed art work brings the mysterious world of Solstice alive. A vibrant cast of characters add to the experience and keep the story moving.. Very well done visual novel. Love the Arcanum-like magitech vibes in the setting, but the characters are what sold it to me. Having two protagonists also puts a fun twist on things.. I loved this game, loved the choices, the beautiful artwork and the amazing sound track and sound effects. The story was cool and got amazing towards the end. I am a fan of visual novels, expecially ones with animated characters. I probably completed it a few times just to see the multiple endings. Still need a few more endings so i can get the final achievement. So far love it. I would reconmmend to all my friends too :). Solstice is a game which is mechanically the same as Cinders, focusing of choice and role-playing to enbale this exploration, the fact the endings have variants within them is a clever touch. One such touch is the mention of a character from the Cinders game, suggesting both games to be in the same universe. One thing which this game has is a note section automatically recording information you have learnt.
As expected, the artwork is gorgeous and there is an atmospheric soundtrack to bring the world to life, this game is full of intrigue and it a lovely concept.. Short version for prospective buys:

I would not catagorize this game as interactive fiction OR a visual novel. Instead, it's more like a movie where you have to read all the dialog.

Also, you have zero control over your character, not even their name. You will be forced to play two different characters, sometimes simultaneously. Presumably because the author thought it would be good experiance for players to identify with highly-educated flirty gay caribian doctors who think highly technical asian women are janitors. And a very stuborn highly-skilled asian woman who apparently has no flaws.

What was good:

The pictures were pretty
The music was nice

How can this game be improved:

0) Go study some Choice of ... Games. They are generally of very high quality story wise, and choice wise. While this game has "polish" and "shine" those games have substance.

1) Make some interesting choices. In this game, almost all choices boiled down to one of two questions: What motivates the character and why do you agree with the author on this bit of social commentary. There is no possibility of dissagreeing with the author on their social commentary, you MUST agree with the author, you just get to choose why.

2) If you have to tell the player when they just made a meaningful choice with something in the UI your doing it wrong. It should be made immediately obvious by the dialog and way other characters treat the Player Characters (PC). I suspect the problem is the choices are all too simmilar. It's hard work to write a route through the story where the PC is a beligerant jerk. Shorten the story and provide that route.

3) Let the player decide who their character is. Forcing the player to play two different characters at the same time is not only irritating and confusing for the player, but I feel it defeats the entire purpose of the genera. Even Otome games like Amnesia provide for this possibility (though "Punch Him" should totally have been at every choice point in that game)

4) Don't state your opinion on something, and force the player to choose one of three reasons they agree with you. I'm thinking of the entire 5 minute conversation on wheather the lady in the bath house should call the Doctor "Doctor". Not only did this diatribe add nothing to the narrative, it's totally out of place. The "they willingly signed a contract so they are all slaves" thing is another place where the choice was more like an english teacher prompting a high school student for analysis "We know jane didn't like this becaus the auther said so, but WHY didn't Jane like this"

5) The transcript (scrollback buffer, story log, whatever it's called in this game) only goes back to the most recent choice, and actually resets the people moving around in the pictures. Every other game puts up an overlay where the player can scroll back indeffinately. That's because you sometimes don't pay much attention when you play through again and can't remember exactly what was said. In short the "cool graphics" thing you were probably going for is a hindreance, not a help.

6) When your writing a story, you MUST provide clear indication when the point of view changes. Making the player read two paragraphs on a journal page BEFORE they get to know who's writing it is just painful. Also the wierd 2 person omneciant view (where the player is choosing for both PCs at the same time) is seriously detremental. This is the only place in the chunk of the game I played where I felt that a repeat of the conversation would have been acceptable, there was really only one choice in that whole thing anyway "Work together? Yes or NO (other games would have a Pretend to thrown in, but I didn't see one here).

7) Other than replacing the awkward two PC's talking to each other simultaneously thing, get rid of all the repeated dialog. It was VERY tiresome to read the something, then read it again 5 minutes later as the other character. If someone wants to know what other choices do, then they can play through again with skip mode and find out. Recall the "Novel" part of the genera name and follow the same rules you do for writing. How many books do you like where every other chapter is nearly identical?. Amazing game
