Last month, The New England Journal of Medicine published Kachin Diabetes Solution Review  results of a study showing bariatric surgery (weight loss surgery) to be an effective treatment modality--perhaps more effective than drug intervention--for type 2 diabetes. The media had a heyday, touting the surgery as the wave of the future.Unfortunately, much went unreported. There is no "miracle" cure happening here. 1 in 1,000 patients dies as a result of the surgery. Those who survive may find that immediately afterward, blood clots, pneumonia, or infections at the incision site are common. Long term issues include ulceration or narrowing of the stomach-intestine connection.

It is very important to note that since those who undergo surgery can only eat approximately 1/2 cup per meal, lifelong nutrient deficiencies are rampant. Vitamin and mineral supplements are a necessity and even with these, the skin and hair may become very dry due to a lack of appropriate nutrition. Dehydration is also common because of the stomach's limited capacity.

As we stated before, it depends on how the individual chooses to manage their blood glucose levels that determines any success of treatment. The good news is that prediabetes is not diabetes and does not have many of the medical impacts as diabetes. So the goal is to keep it that way and one of the best ways to that is make changes in diet and increase the amount of exercise. A study by the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) indicated that 30 minutes of moderate physical exercise and a reduction of 7% in body weight resulted in a 58% reduced risk to developing type 2 diabetes over medication alone.

Now if you are saying...7% reduction in body weight!!! Well there are many resources available on the Web that can help you lose much more than 7%. Look at this as an opportunity to finally get that slim figure you have been promising to get every New Years Eve resolution. Remember the steps you take now will greatly reduce the potential for developing Diabetes later. As always, seek the advice of your doctor before starting any exercise routine.
