Unlike Olympic lifting and bodybuilding powerlifting is not a well known type of weightlifting so many people do not carry a full understanding of the sport. Powerlifting competitions centre on three exercises only; these are the deadlift, bench press and squat. The orders in which the exercises are carried out are the squat, then the bench press and finally finishing with the deadlift.
Each powerlifter will be put into a weight category so they are competing against lifters similar in weight. This is to ensure that everyone is recognized for their achievements in their weight class, not only the powerlifters who lift the heaviest and are the heaviest in weight. In competitions a powerlifter has three or four attempts at lifting on each exercise, the heaviest valid weight for each exercise counts towards their total score. The total score is the heaviest weight for each exercise combined.
Training for powerlifting normally involves three to four training sessions a week lifting extremely heavy weights with low repetitions in each set. The typical way of training is called the 5x5 workout and involves lifting the heaviest weight possible for 5 sets of 5 reps. When a powerlifter has achieved 5 sets of 5 reps on the weight they are lifting they will add 2.5 kilograms to the weight on the next training session and try to lift 5 sets of 5 reps not moving up in weight until this is achieved.
