"Heat-not-burn" tobacco products 'likely to pose less risk than cigarettes'

New "heat-not-burn" tobacco products on sale in the UK are harmful to health but are likely to be less risky than smoking conventional cigarettes, a scientific advisory committee has said.To get more news about Hitaste, you can visit hitaste.net official website.

Evidence suggests that the products, which heat tobacco in a device to produce a vapour instead of burning it as in conventional cigarettes, still pose a risk to users, the independent Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment (COT) announced.

The COT reviewed the two products currently registered for sale in the UK, Philip Morris International's IQOS and British American Tobacco's iFuse. It said it was unable to quantify precisely the risk from heat-not-burn products compared with conventional cigarettes because of the limited data available.

COT chairman Professor Alan Boobis said: "The evidence suggests that heat-not-burn products still pose a risk to users.

"There is likely to be a reduction in risk for cigarette smokers who switch to heat-not-burn products but quitting entirely would be more beneficial."The COT also found a reduction in risk to bystanders where conventional smokers switch to heat-not-burn products, but said the risk to an unborn child from women using these products during pregnancy was difficult to quantify and the aim should be to quit entirely.

Professor Boobis added: "The committee expressed concern over the potential for non-smokers to take up these products because they are not without risk."Action on Smoking and Health (Ash) chief executive Deborah Arnott said: "COT concluded that while heat-not-burn products are lower risk than smoking they are not risk-free, so quitting tobacco use completely is still the healthiest option.

"The COT review did not examine the evidence on e-cigarettes, so was unable to compare the two."This is needed to help provide reassurance to the public and Ash recommends COT be commissioned to carry out such a comparison."
