To be honest my thoughts were this movie would be a rape of Chuck Heston, I'm 58 years old. This movie was a genuine thoughtful remake of a timeless classic, no competition with the old, a new version of a timeless classic. Timur Bekmambetov had a very rare idea "something original" For Hollywood anyway, he made his thoughts and vision come through. I liked this movie, even with Freeman that pinko bastard being in it to pull some viewers in. The ending was a bit much with the cheering , I expected to see some guy's trying to get a wave going. Other than that a great effort.
I was twelve when the 1959 version of "Ben Hur" came out. Merchandising surrounding its release not only included new editions of Lew Wallace's novel, but also heavily abridged, large format books for younger readers with colourful illustrations and big type. This remake of "Ben Hur" reminds me of those.
The basic story is there with boyhood friends Judah Ben Hur (Jack Huston) and Messala (Toby Kebbell) falling out as they grow into manhood and their Jewish and Roman heritages collide. At various points both men cross paths with Jesus. But he is treated in a more flesh and blood manner here; no backlit, auburn haired mystical being this time around.
The filmmakers also put the red pencil through great chunks of the story including the relationship between Ben Hur and Quintus Arius. Even Messala turns out to be an OK kind of guy - nothing like the ruthless aristocrat portrayed by Steven Boyd 57 years ago.
If you ever wondered what some of the epics of the 1950's and 60's would look like with the magic of CGI then this "Ben Hur" gives the answer. Instead of the bathtub model ships in the sea battle of the 1959 version, we have a brilliantly staged battle seen from the viewpoint of the galley slaves. Incidental views of ancient Jerusalem are also impressive and convincing, and of course, amazing things were done with the chariot race that would have had William Wyler and his crew salivating.
The 1959 version was a bum-numbing old thing, but it felt big. Miklos Rosza's massive overture filled the theatre before the curtains even parted and you cannot overestimate how much his monumental score drove that film. Marco Beltrami's score is more subdued.
And that's the thing; this version lacks the intensity of the earlier version. Charlton Heston and Steven Boyd burned up the screen compared to the almost urbane interpretations of Jack Huston and Toby Kebbell.
But what if we don't compare this version to any other. After all, the filmmakers claim this is a re-imagining not a remake.
We still have problems. The film has more the pace of a TV movie. The opening with narration by Morgan Freeman almost feels like we missed the first episode and we are starting off with a catch-up. Much of what happens smacks of rewriting and decisions made by committee with extraneous battles, zealots etc. thrown in.
The ending still has me shaking my head. To be fair though, visually, there is enough to satisfy most sword and sandals fans. All the flash and sizzle of modern movie effects can't make up for a once spectacular tale that feels not just scaled-down, but shrunk.
