I know from experience that nasty feeling in your gut the second you go to throw something away and you get a shot of anxiety like if you might need it one day or if you don't want your finger prints on it or if you don't want to throw it away because it may in some way be disrespectful indirectly to God.

The above are examples and there could be an infinite number of reasons for this hoarding behavior. It all really has to do with the associates that you assign to the piece of trash or item that you are holding on to. If you assign a value to it by association then yes it's going to be tough to let it go, but if you just throw it away right before the trash man comes and he takes it, you'll have anxiety but there's nothing you can do about it to get it back! Your brain will go through mental torture for a while but then it will see that nothing bad really happened and this is the most liberating feeling in the world!
