There are actually three types of  Power Efficiency Guide Review heat generated in the home: convective, conductive and radiant. Radiant heat transfer accounts for close to 75% of the heat that's added to or removed from a home. It's this type of heat that foil insulation is best at addressing since it acts as a barrier. About 97% of the heat cannot pass through it, reflecting back into the space it came from.

If you use a radiant barrier in the attic, the sun's rays can actually be deflected back out rather than heating up the attic and then your home. This allows your air conditioner to take a break while cooling the home on hot days. By the same token, if you use the barrier on the floor of the attic then the heat used in colder months to keep your house warm will not escape through the roof. The badiant barrier will actually reflect the heat back into the home rather than allowing it to continue its natural journey upward.

Standard fiberglass insulation works differently. It is measured with an R-Value which refers to how well it resists the heat flow through an object. The higher the R-value, the better it is at absorbing the heat. However, it is simply slowing down the process of the heat as it goes through its thickness. It doesn't do anything to block or reflect the heat. This technology works best for convective and conductive heat, not radiant. The problem with this type of insulation, other than it is not effective with the most prevalent type of heat transfer, is that it can lose its effectiveness if it gets wet, or breaks down.

The good news for most homeowners with the older type of insulation in their attic is that a radiant barrier can be installed over the top of existing attic insulation. Even though installation is easy, and you don't need protective clothing to install a radiant barrier, if you are installing over the current fiberglass insulation you will still need to take the necessary precautions because of the pre-existing material. Once you see the difference that the foil insulation makes on your heating and cooling costs, you can look at other areas of the home for places to insulate and save such as the ducts, the water heater, and the crawl space.
