By learning to create order in your life you will be able to take back control of your life. You leave an effective legacy when others have experienced the authenticity and integrity of your character, not just the benefits of your good works.

Confidently and unambiguously answering this most important "Why" question in both your life and your business is the first step toward achieving anything worthwhile. If this step is not taken, any accomplishment will be like cotton candy - a lot of fluff and calories but devoid of any lasting satisfaction or means of growth. Your hunger for significance will not be sated but merely made to increase. The contentment and sense of fulfillment that should result from your achievements will not increase, rather be stultified and stymied.

This is akin to winning multiple battles only to lose the war. The point of human existence is to wind up a winner not just throughout your life but also at the end of it. Stephen Covey provides an apt metaphor for this notion when he writes in "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" that many folks spend their entire lives climbing the ladder of success only to arrive at the top to discover that the ladder is leaning against the wrong building. They succeed in getting to the top but fail to create a legacy that will effectively guide and sustain those who follow.

When you fully answer the "Why" question, the answers to your "How" questions become shaped by your character and guided by a philosophy of life and business that can be summed up in the following statements. Taken together, they communicate the concept that people normally live their lives on the surface but can, with guidance and encouragement, go much deeper and live richer, more fulfilling lives. They can make contributions and perform in ways that, under "normal" circumstances, would be impossible for them.
