More Ys is always a good day! Ys: Memories of Celceta was originally released on PS Vita after Ys Seven. MoC is an evolution of the gameplay from Seven, continuing the party based combat with the rock-paper-scissors vulnerabilities, but a faster skill system with the first attack auto charging to provide additional SP instead of needing to manually hold down the attack button. This smooths out the learning curve while allowing veterans to dive right in. This time Adol doesn't fall off a boat, but wanders into the city with no memory. Adol is told by a friend that he left to explore the Great Forest, and after a few local events, he's once again spurred into action to - you guessed it - explore the Great Forest. The allies he meets along the way fulfill the varies JRPG roles, and each has their own playstyle to keep things fresh, although personally I mainly played as Adol unless I was learning skills. As a Vita port, the game performs great. No lag or graphics issues, no crashes, and runs beautifully. The graphics are a little blocky since they are uprezzed from the Vita's 960x544 resolution, but its much better looking than Ys Seven's PSP port did. This also looks better than that horrid Joyoland port from a few years ago, so big props to XSEED on how to properly port a title to PC. (yes, I'm looking at THAT GAME) Ys: Memories of Celceta is an easy recommendation to make.. I saw JRPG, I give like. For the record, I own all the Ys games available on Steam, & have beaten all of them, some titles several times over. I also beat this on PS Vita. Literally today, I just got a new gaming laptop (MSI GS65VR) that I am still setting up, so believe it or not, I am playing with GPD Pocket with Atom Z8750 + 8GB RAM :) And yes, it's fully playable - my setting is 800x600 with everything set to low, but on GPD 7in screen, it still looks good. I am mentioning this because like all Ys games released by XSEED (of course not including Ys VIII by NISA, cough, cough), it is very well optimized. So those who are holding purchases because your laptop / desktop is far lower than recommended minimum, like mine, have no fear! Now there are some niggles, which can be really minor, if at that, such as in opening FMV scene, where there is music but it stops while the scenes continues (not sure if it was the same case on the Vita, I don't remember playing it awhile back), & a more concerning issue, on some areas, I can't really see much because Adol & other character(s) are taking too much of real estate to the point I am literally blind of what's out there (and I am fairly sure this wasn't case on Vita). It's possible because I have set the display to 800x600. But regardless, if XSEED can optimize that issue, then it would make playing on GPD Pocket infinitely more playable. Having said that starting tomorrow I will be playing it on GS65 with all max settings ;) Ys is one of my favorite series since from Ys 1 & 2 on Turbo CD. Having said that, I believe that this is a no brainier to any Ys fan - new & old. And I would also recommend who likes Action RPGs & heck any RPGs in general.. Fast hack and slash + Fairly easy + Interesting enough story and characters 8/10. I just finished this game a few minutes ago and here are my thoughts. This game is AWESOME. Like the other YS games, this game has an awesome soundtrack to listen to. SOme of the puzzles stumped me for a few minutes but I was able to figure them out after some trial & error. If you are a fan of the Ys series I highly recommend picking this game up and playing it for yourself. Now here's look towards me playing Ys 8.. This game is so good. Story is good. No bullcrap, no politics, no sjw crap. Just pure adventure. Nice level design too. Regardless of its dated graphics, the story stuck to its roots. It did not disappoint at all. Good job! Can't wait for Monstrum Nox. They should release it for steam simultaneously.. Amazing game and an amazing port by XSeeD. --STORY-- Ys: Memories of Celceta is an HD remake of Ys 4, and thus chronologically it's in the middle of the storyline for the Ys series. In it's own self-contained bubble, the story of Celceta isn't anything grand. Unlike some other Ys games, Celceta's story merely has its own story and goes with it instead of adding any grand expansion to the Ys world's lore. However, this doesn't mean it's a bad story, the story is very fun and has it's own unique twists that are nice to experience, especially near the final phase of the game. In order to completely appreciate Celceta's story it is recommended to play previous released Ys titles as it makes lore nods and references which made the Ys fan in me go "Oh wow that's just like !" and so forth. It's not mandatory, but it adds a lot to the experience. --GAMEPLAY-- The Ys series is known for it's fast, skill-based action-packed gameplay and Falcom did a great job here. Ys Celceta builds off of the Party-Based System which was first introduced in Ys Seven back in 2009. Adol is not the sole playable character, but instead one of many as you'll pick up several playable characters with their own unique styles of combat. Each character has their own set of skills that you can map to the skill buttons, and they learn several more skills as you continue playing. Skills can combo off of one another and depending on how skilled you are you can crate some nifty combos. Furthermore, Ys Celceta has a very fun dodge/block mechanic that reminds me of Bayonetta. If you dodge at the right time, time will slow down allowing you to get more hits in, and if you block at the right time you nullify damage and deal critical damage for a certain period of time, it's very skill-based is a shining point of the game's gameplay. Overall it's extremely fluid and fun. My only complaint about the gameplay is its use of items. There are items for pretty much any status effect and you can stack wayyyy too many HP potions which can trivialize the game, assuming you farm the money to buy that many pots to begin with. So I suggest limiting yourself if possible. --OTHER TIDBITS-- Ys Celceta can run at 60 FPS if your rig can handle it, it has a lot of graphic customizable options that will also let lower-end systems play it (like mine, lol). You can save virtually anywhere in this game which makes it extremely friendly to play in short or long bursts alike. The voice acting is pretty good as you have a lot of talented VAs like Bryce Papenbrook, Cristina Vee, Wendee Lee, and so forth. The music is simply stunning, Falcom is known for their music and it really shines here. And the graphics while not the best are definitely serviceable, especially with this port that allows the game to look far better than it did on the VITA. --OVERALL-- Solid entry in the Ys series, every Ys fan has to play this game and overall a great Action RPG experience that will last you anywhere between 25-30 hours of gameplay on a first playthrough.. Another year, another good Ys port from the fine folks at XSEED. Clearly Hyde Inc. was able to learn from their growing pains from their first port -- Ys SEVEN -- because as far as I can tell, there were significantly less issues with MoC on launch than its predecessor. The folks over at NIS America could learn a thing or two from this port -- the best I've heard from someone defending the Ys VIII PC port was that in "only" crashed 15 times during 50 hours of gameplay. You want to know how many times MoC crashed on me? Zero. Granted, I started playing the game roughly a week after launch, so I may have benefited from some later patches. Memories of Celceta is an interquel, taking place between Ys II and Oath in Felghana. It's Falcom's own take on Ys IV, which was previously farmed out to two other companies -- Tonkin House's downright mediocre Mask of the Sun for the Super Famicom, which was considered canonical by Falcom until MoC came out and Alfa System's The Dawn of Ys for the PC Engine, generally considered the best of the bump combat-style Ys games. Of course, neither of these versions came out in North America or Europe in any official capacity, so MoC gets the edge on that front. The game starts with Adol wandering around the town of Casnan, having completely lost his memory. He stumbles his way into the local inn before collapsing. Once he recovers, he makes the acquaintanceship of Duren, an information broker, who decides to help Adol, as he has a reputation for finding adventure (and therefore, useful information). Soon after, they are tasked by the local governess Griselda to explore and map out the mysterious forests of Celceta. Throughout the journey, Adol is reintroduced to people he met on his previous journey (one he has unfortunately forgotten) and finds many mysterious artifacts, stumbling upon another world-ending crisis as he often does. Memories of Celceta runs on a refined version of Ys SEVEN's engine, thus the party system from the previous game returns. This game also manages to add a new defense mechanic: the "Flash Move". If the player's character is able to dodge an enemy attack at a specific moment, the enemies onscreen slowdown for a brief period, similar to Bayonetta's Witch Time. Unlocking new special attacks is also different from the previous game, they're obtained by defeating a set number of "difficult" enemies. Frankly, I think I preferred the old system. The original release also included various touch puzzles that exploited the Vita's touch screen and touchpad, but later updates allowed them to be performed with standard controls (to make the game compatible with PSTV). The PC version allows players to use their mouse or the controller, which is a nice touch. XSEED and Hyde did a much better job on the graphics this time around, managing to even offset the filters present in the original Vita version of the game -- though a similar bloom option is available in the game. On top of that, they managed to even exceed (ha ha!) Ys SEVEN's 60 FPS, offering 120 frames per second and even uncapped, though the latter isn't particularly recommended. So just like the previous game (and every other Ys game XSEED's released on here), I'd recommend you pick it up if you're in the mood to play a damn fine action RPG. As with the previous game, it's a little on the easy side -- I did my first run on Hard Mode, just like with SEVEN.. Stable frame, no crashing or hicups. Only downside is no true ultra wide support. Can use ultra wide resolutions but it will have black box for anything over the 16:9 aspect ratio. Game is centered. Great to play this game again after beating it on Vita years ago. If your a Y's fan you already bought it. Get this while you wait for Y's VIII to be fully fixed, cheaper aswell.. Didn't like the controls. Didn't like the story Didn't like the UI. Didn't like the Sound. Likes: None.
