This condition can be fatal, or at least cause serious health problems. Excessive water in the system has been shown to disrupt your natural electrolyte balance, put excessive strain on the kidneys, cause irregular heartbeat, and allow fluids to enter the lungs. Okay, so that is the bad news associated with over drinking, but there is plenty of good news as well. Consider this, a healthy adult can process up to 15 liters of water each day, without any ill effects, if the water is drank over time. It would take an enormous volume of water, drank over a very short period of time to cause water intoxication. You almost have to try to get water intoxication, and most adults will feel "full" long before they are able to drink enough water to feel the ill effects of water intoxication. The general guideline is that adults will need three quarts of liquids each day. Now, much of that you can get from the foods you eat, but the recommendation is to still supplement your liquid intake with water each day. If it is a warm day, or you are exercising you will need to adjust your water intake accordingly. So, while it is possible to drink too much water it is not something for most rationale adults to be concerned with. Whenever I see or hear that someone is "going on a diet," I can't help but laugh. I am also sure that who ever's diet that person is following is also laughing...all the way to the bank! The fact of the matter is that deep down, we all know what foods are good for us versus what foods are bad for us. The problems with thinking healthy start to arise when we start looking at our checking accounts as well as to what is convenient versus what takes more time to make.I am no stranger to eating unhealthy. After all, it takes me all of but two minutes to place an order and receive my food at McDonald's versus the thirty minutes to an hour that it would take for me to prepare something at my home. It is a decision that I consciously make whenever I choose to eat unhealthy. The same goes for any other person who has made a late night run to their favorite fast food restaurant. However, fast food restaurants shouldn't be taking all the blame for supplying us with unhealthy food. As a matter of fact, most eating establishments serve relatively unhealthy food, and those who do serve healthier choices are going to be charging more money to do so.
