A German submarine is boarded by disguised American submariners trying to capture their Enigma cipher machine.
In the battle front of espionage and code cracking of World War II, there remains but one task on the Allied agenda: the capture of a German "Enigma" machine which will allow the Allied naval forces to locate and track submerged German U-Boat submarines. When one such German vessel breaks down after a battle with British forces, a secret mission is dispatched to take over the U-Boat by commando American forces and retrieve an Enigma machine intact. The raid goes well, at first, yet following the destruction of the American mothership and the arrival of reenforcement German ships, the Americans trapped on the U-Boat must use their training and wits to pilot U-571 in order to save their lives.
Submarine movies are a subclass of their own, and almost entirely male-specific. There are few female characters, those are very peripheral, and women tend not to like the movies. U-571 is a typically Hollywood but fairly entertaining submarine movie, with action, suspense, bravery, sacrifice and some psychological twists and moderate character development. Not a fantastic movie, but certainly entertaining and worth a rental.

As for the fuss about it being historically inaccurate, my thinking is, c'mon people, it's Hollywood. Get a grip. They're not in the business of making documentaries, but rather they are trying to sell a product. This movie was made by an American studio, and they decided, and rightly I think, that the film would be much more profitable with American characters. So they altered history, like they almost always do when making movies based on a true story.

People who know their history know of the remarkable heroism and tenacity of all of the British people in WWII, and especially their armed forces. But it's 60 years later, so let's drop the chip off the shoulder and evaluate the movie based on its artistic/entertainment merits rather than some outdated political agenda. I remember seeing this in the theatre when it first came out. The sound design is what stood out the most, and still stands out today. I can "listen" to this movie over and over again. The DVD version I saw recently has commentary by director Jonathan Mostow. In it he talks about the value of having theatre-style "6-channel surround format (at home) because it really replicates, as close as possible, the experience of seeing a movie in the theatre."

I like watching "older" movies and listening to director commentary, especially when they get technical. Mostow, in his commentary, goes on to say how "with the film to tape transfers now-a-days you can really extract a tremendous amount of visual information out of each frame." (!) "Film to tape."

Film, to tape, to glass master DVD, to DVD replication. Ah yes, the turn of the century technology a mere 17 years ago!

Imagine, 17 years from now, we'll be mocking 4K UHD when we're sitting at home watching our favourite new-release film with some sort of organic-holographic-display-thing that looks so real it will seem like the actors are right in front of you and you can reach out and touch them; with sound so authentic you'd believe you were right there, with them, in the action. OK, maybe not 17 years, but perhaps 20. U-571's plot moves like a rocket, never pausing for breath, and this works to a point, but certain events ... are glossed over in favor of more (exceptionally well-done) shots of exploding depth charges and topside battles.
No. It was never intended to be a documentary. It's an action/suspense film based on submarine warfare during WWII. Inspired by actual events, as the majority of WWII movies are. The actual U-571 was never captured by either the British or the Americans - she was sunk off the Irish coast by a torpedo launched from a Shorts Sunderland Flying boat from No. 461 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force.

(It should be noted that U-570 was captured by the British on her first patrol and saw service as HMS Graph from 1942 until 1944, when she was withdrawn from service due to maintenance issues).

The Enigma machine was actually first captured by the British, a fact the filmmakers acknowledged in the end credits of this movie. Out of the thousands of hours logged by U-boats, there is only one recorded incident in which a German captain gave the order to fire on torpedoed survivors. U-boat crews were more humanitarian and often provided aid to their victims before submerging. They very rarely brought survivors with them as space on a boat was extremely cramped for its own crew; often times the U-boats just simply left them to die, as seen in Das Boot. So the shooting of survivors in this film could be seen more as mercy killings rather than leaving them to die.

In terms of the film, it's likely that because U-571 was so badly crippled, short on crew members and supplies, with sensitive information aboard, it was too risky to leave the British survivors to possibly report their position. Not to mention, as we see with Taylor and his crew keeping Wassner alive; sabotage is a possibility as well.
