About This Content

The S1 Line of the Hamburg S-Bahn is the city’s second largest, initially traversing the outskirts before diving into the heart and serving many locations including the nearby international airport. This historic line originated in the early 1900s, and still aids in the movement of people day in and day out. Take command of the ever-busy ‘Mass Transit Metro’ over the Hamburg S1 S-Bahn for Train Simulator!

Life, for what would become known as the Hamburg S-Bahn, began in 1906 with the opening of Hamburg Hbf where steam hauled services would run between Blankenese and the city itself. Despite the railway tracks in this area were not exactly ‘new’, this is the first time that they had been used in ‘rapid-transit’ style operations; as such, the new usage came under the name of the Hamburg-Altona Urban and Suburban Railway.

Extensions of the suburban service quickly followed, allowing connections with Hasselbrook and Ohlsdorf on the eastern face of Hamburg. It was also around this time when the decision was taken to electrify the line, by 1907, electric trains were utilising the, once current, overhead catenary throughout the city. It was at this point, when electricity was the source of motive power that the line fell into what could be categorised as an S-Bahn today. It would not be until 1924 that the Hamburg S-Bahn was so-named however, this occurred once the old Alster Valley Railway to Poppenbüttel was acquired and the route to Wedel was on-lease for suburban use.

By the 1930s, it was decided that the Hamburg S-Bahn could benefit from re-electrification, this time however, using 1200 V third rail. Similar in most respects to the Berlin S-Bahn, the introduction of third rail would provide more versatile power needs as trains and services got faster. The under-side contact method was chosen as standard, and the line saw a whole 450 V increase of Berlin’s offering, to further improve acceleration and performance. By 1939, all overhead was abandoned and third rail dominated the line. It would not be until 1959 that the line to Wedel was acquired and electrified.

In 1965, the Hamburg S-Bahn numbering scheme came into play and saw Wedel – Poppenbüttel, the second longest S-Bahn route, become known as the S1 Line. While the line has held a key importance throughout its life, be it steam powered, overhead-populated or otherwise, it was not until 2008 that the mere purpose of the line would change for the busier. An extension was built out of Ohlsforf station and headed westbound, only one station was on the new spur – Hamburg International Airport, the Airport Shuttle was born. Services would now split to serve Poppenbüttel and the Airport simultaneously, and naturally, a connection with the Airport has seen the S1 become even more vital to the growth of business and tourism within and surrounding Hamburg.

The Hamburg S1 S-Bahn features the 45 km route from Wedel to Poppenbüttel and Hamburg Airport as an extension to the existing 64 km Hamburg Lübeck Railway (also included in this single route totaling more than 100km of German railway).

The DB BR 474 Plus EMU is also included as key modern traction to the Hamburg S1 line; the traction included in Hamburg-Lübeck, DB BR 218, DB BR 145, DB BR 294 and associated rolling stock.

The route is very good I really like the detail. But the train is a total disaster i'm sorry to say, needs work doing on it.. I am not bothered about point scoring in scenarios, I buy a route for the route itself, NOT, what trains come with it, we all have access to RW Tools, swap content out if it doesn't drive properly, folks cannot possibly give a low score for the layout just because they can't be bothered to do something about the poorly built trains!
Having said that though, not all the trains are bad, but, it depends on whether you are misgiving to small glitches, or, not. This is a quite brilliant extension to the first Hamburg-Lubeck route that was released to the community, which now includes the various underground\/overground services provided by Hamburg S-bahn. You start on the first leg of the journey in Wedel on the outskirts of Hamburg at a small station and continue overground on both single and double tracks to Blankenese. Here you will see several of the old German semaphore signals still in operation, which makes a nice change from all those colour lights we see everywhere. Overground still we carry on to Altona, which is a huge Station and has several branch lines going off in all directions, it also has many sidings for your passenger train consists to fill up. Here you will also find your first underground line and station, and you can then carry on all the way into Hamburg main Station. I also detected some overground trackage from Altona to the City, however, there was no scenery whatsoever built by DTG on this stretch, so, you can make your minds up which way you want to go to get into Hamburg. This part of the map is quite built up, naturally, and might cause low-end computer users to stutter as you make your way out of the city through the suburbs along the many lines that converge and exit into portals. You drive down to Hasselbrook Station overground and then you can diverge North onto the 2nd part of the extension to Barmbek and Ohlsdorf Stations, both of these locations have quite large Train Depots for your multiple unit cleaning and maintenance. You can then carry on to a split in the trackwork and either travel underground to Hamburg Airport Station, which is pretty neat, but, a dead end, or, carry on going on the 3rd rail to the end of the line at Poppenbuttel Station and sidings, a few miles further on, this has a unique footbridge overpass that has been beautifully constructed and well worth having a look at!
To keep on the original layout from Hasselbrook Station you can then take the OHLE mainline all the way to Lubeck, you can start your freight train running anywhere around here really, but, I generally start mainly at Wandsbeck, which is away from the City suburban area and less frame rate hungry on my PC, I then have a good run across to the huge main yard and harbour sidings at Lubeck. This extended route has been superbly constructed, although, the lack of scenery in certain spots and PZB and signalling is not quite up to DTG's usual standard, which can be mildly irritating, but, the layout offers huge potential for S-bahn overground and underground passenger trains, regional and InterCity excursions and plenty of freight train workings. The layout has been excellently built, the German buildings and ground texturing along with the smooth track running is particularly good and the change from the busy City scene to the rural countryside and farmland is very well designed, a really brilliant route that will keep you entertained for hours, and even though it has its faults, I would definately recommend it for the amount of operational train workings it offers you overall and the lovely map to play them on.. I am very happy with this route and train add-on. The scenery is very well done. I cannot exactly speak for the train's performance as I have never been to Germany and have not experienced the real train. But I don't think the train is as dreadful as some reviewers would make it to be. It is true that other models such as the 420 and 423 have better braking. But one has to adjust to the equipment he is driving at the time. As a retired real life subway motorman, I found that to be true of real world eqipment. Different trains brake differently. That said, I also very much like the scenarios. I think this entire add-on was well planned and executed. It is well worth the money and I recommend it. Great route spolied by speed signs on Driver's Guide being placed in wrong spot or missing altogether meaning constantly having to reload or make copious notes about the errors. How does such obvious errors and so many get past any competent beta testing program?. Good map. But as others have stated some of the signals are incorrect or in incorrect spaces. Some signals show with no other indicators behind the green when they should be green with yellow to indicate that you should be reducing your speed for an upcoming speed reduction. As a result you're abruptly coming into those sections speeding at the prior speed limit and lose massive amounts as a result. This needs to be fixed to give players the full potential of route that it obviously has. It can get laggy at times due to being resource intensive. But I can overlook that. I don't get the brake problems that others reported about the 474Plus. As some others have said you do also have to the mechanical brake along with the throttle\/brake combo lever. The full Hamburg-Lubeck route with complete scenarios is indeed included within the S1 download. This is why folks who already had Hamburg-Lubeck got big discounts for the S1 route. SO it does make the purchase worth the money, especially if you buy the route as part of the package that includes the DB 114 loco addon. The main and only con for me right now is the incorrect signals at spots in the S1 scenarios that cause big point deductions for speeding. As a result of that I can only give this route 8\/10. Otherwise I can still recommend it for its potential after fixing the signal flaws and for including the complete Hamburg-Lubeck route for those who don't already have that route.. Far too many simple flaws in several scenarios, you even can't finish at least two of them (they end quite abruptly by sending you back to the main menu for no apparent reason whatsoever). Unless you can get it with a 40-50% discount I recommend you find something better to spend 30 euro on.. This is a beautiful route, however there are issues with the underground part with not being able to see the train in the stations without knowing when it's time to leave the station. Also speed issues with going from 60mhp to 40mhp without Hud notification thru the entire route, and why 40mhp through the underground part of the ride and 60mhp otherwise. Please fix these issues. While I was looking forward for this route, I am quite disappointed after I ran my first scenario.

+ High Visual Standards:
As usual, the route and used assets look quite good.

- Signalling errors:
1.) I encountered a single flashing green signal, which in Germany together with a speed table shows an upcoming speed limit. In this case it was flashing green, but without any further indication. Not existent in Germany, so I was quite confused how to interpret it.
2.) No speed limit warnings

- Train Brakes
3.) Way to weak brakes. It is close to impossible to get this train to a standstill as it's supposed to be.

All in all I found several severe issues with the details of this route. While it does look good, those problems make this route and train seem unfinished and rushed. As an owner of Hamburg-Luebeck I got a discount of 40%. With some fixes it might become better, but for now I've requested a refund.

No recommondation at this time.
