Eh, it's ok. For history enthusiasts, it is kind of cool to re-create Caesar's campaigns in Gaul, or play as one of the tribes attempting to resist his conquest. But unlike the base game, I see little reason to play through this side-campaign more than once. Honestly, it didnt really feel much different from the main game, except that for Rome you eventually have to deal with the Gauls uniting against you in a way not so different from the "realm divide" found in Shogun 2. Overpriced, but at least this is a DLC with actual new content in it. Grab this on a sale if it seems interesting to you.. A must buy, absolutely! WIth this DLC, Rome 2 acquires its final form. It retains the qualities of the main big campaign and gets rid of the imperfections. Caesar in Gaul is a pressing, well-structured campaign with a challenging late game (in opposite to the standard campaign) and interesting IA enemy factions.. WOW - a great extra campaign for Rome II, who doesn't want that!!!.(ignore the 0.0 hours as it must count towards the whole game) Anyway Featuring a new campaign map, which focuses on Caeser's exploits in so called "Barbarian" territory. It contains new technologies to research, amongst other things such as more turns per year. new weather system - also it pits you right in the middle of a time period and campaign map where most of the tribes hate you (so what's new lol), so right away you are at war or disliked with most factions but you still have allies, plus you can play as a barbarian tribe. So having played a while but not as much as I had hoped (I was waiting for Hannibal at the Gates DLC) I can still say that this addon/DLC is worth it for fans of ROME II - you won't be dissapointed - just a smaller campaign map with more provinces to conquer that purely focuses on the Rome/Barbarian side of war of this period - so all in all a small breakdown of the Rome II Grand Campaign Map, into a smaller more manegable chunk - so top marks all round - it can only improve :) - so get out there and conquer "For Rome".or the barbarians. Pros: Gaius Julius Caesar. Seasons and Turns make sense in this DLC. Delves a bit deeper than the base game into the gallic factions. Fun to play, more immersive than the base game. Cons: Technology tree makes little sense, icons and buffs are strange. Some path issues, funnelling a problem. Overall: Second Best DLC you can own. Especially with all the new factions and units added.. My first time playing the Caesar in Gaul Campaign. Diffuculty- Very hard No mods no cheat My first impression was that if felt quite easy. I started as the Nervii and made my way through the neiboring tribes and eventaully formed the Galic confederation. At this point i felt that nothing really threaten my confederation until i lost track of Publius Crassus and his legion who continued to harass me with hit and run tactics. Rome is closing on my borders so i decide to unite the tribes and push them back to the Alps. I get a message saying something about "Rome military expansion" I shrug it off as i know i have them cornerd. But as i cross the alps who is there to meet me if not Gaius julius caesar himself. And with him stands 10 fully armed legions ready to retake the territory they lost. By that time it was already to late.i lost half of my armies within 2 turns. The battle for Gaul had just began.. This is one of the mini-campaigns that I was looking forward to. CA can't do open map campaigns properly anymore. The early game is decent, but there's basically 0 game in mid and end game (either that or they attempt some stupid, artificial stunt to inject some gameplay into something that is dead because of an utter lack in content and design consideration - yo, it's boring). The fact that they try to do linear campaign is ok with me, it's the low effort end result that I have a problem with. The battles are enjoyable, but ultimately it's a lot of "meh" most of the time. The AI cheats and it's annoying. The campaign mindlessly reuses mechanics that were meant for other things instead of creating fully fledged features appropriate for this expansion (i.e. the way they transformed the "research" tree into a way for political exploits/intrigues, which could have deserved a different approach entirely). Ultimately, it fails to deliver better gameplay, some extra content is there and if you like the formula, you might like this better, but if you don't like the base game, this is not going to improve the experience for you as it hasn't for me -> obvious conclusion.. A great scenario for Total War Rome 2, played on a new Gaul based map, with some limited neighbouring areas, such as southern Britain. You can of course play as the Romans, or as a number of the Gallic factions of the time. The game is shorter than the standard game, and seasonal weather conditions help give the game an authentic feel. My one gripe is that despite the campaign supposedly ending in 51BC, if you don't in fact win by that time (by achieving your factions set goals), the game just rolls on into 50BC without any kind of notification that you failed the scenario. I played a full 186 turns and then stopped once 50BC arrived. The option to play on is definitely welcome, but there should be some kind of splash screen. I would rather come back and try again within the timeframe, than spend the rest of my life trying to complete one scenario. However, this aside, this has definitely been the best Total War experience I've had to date. Definitely recommended.
