Aga Ben Dragore, a knife-wielding, enigmatic Egyptian Arab, is seeking a sacred jewel which has been stolen from an ancient tomb. The thief tells him that he sold it to Professor Morlant, a fanatical Egyptologist who fervently believes in the pagan power of the ancient Egyptian gods. Dying from a mysteriously disfiguring ailment, Morlant entrusts his faithful manservant to bandage the jewel in his hand and warns him of dire consequences if his dying wishes aren't carried out. After his burial in an Egyptian-type tomb on his estate, an anonymous robber steals the precious stone from the corpse. Although the ghastly-looking dead man rises at the next full moon to seek revenge, neither he nor the audience know which member of the household possesses the powerful jewel.
An Egyptologist returns from the dead to take revenge on those who have violated his tomb.
I am pleased to announce that a gorgeous print of this British horror film has been preserved on DVD as opposed to the low quality public domain copies that have been lingering on VHS for decades. I am not pleased to report however that this does not make the film any better.

What is basically a rip off of the Boris Karloff 1932 hit The Mummy is weak in comparison to that Universal classic and what results in this one is a boring melodrama where too much information is shared but none of it really has any interest in moving the plot forward. Along with Karloff, there are several other veterans of classic horror films - Sir Cedric Hardwicke and Ernest Theiser are among them, and they provide the only interest in this otherwise weak attempt to give the British film industry an early horror classic.

It seems to start off well with in Egyptologist searching for a valuable gem stolen from a pharaoh's tomb, and when it ends up in the hands of Karloff, he is going to die because of a supposed curse put on him for having the gem. Karloff turns into a modern mummy, and when he rises from his tomb basically becomes a killing machine going around the countryside terrorizing the people he blames for his demise and ultimately leads into an hour of chat and 20 minutes of somewhat engrossing chills.

Wearing fairly scary makeup, Karloff does his best to make this rise above the mediocrity that it is. Hardwicke and Theiser also add some class to the proceedings and some other familiar British actors are also part of the story as well, among them future rank character actress Kathleen Harrison. There is a token young romance which also distracts from the continued interest in the film and as a result this ends up simply being a major bore. I am sure that it has a cult following, but I am not a part of that cult. The surprising thing about THE GHOUL is that it features an impressive background score for a film made in '33, when most soundtracks were almost completely devoid of music. This is something the other comments here failed to mention.

The other plus factor is the brilliant B&W photography done in Gothic style to suit the story elements here. An Egyptologist returns from the grave to take revenge on a servant who has stolen a sacred jewel. BORIS KARLOFF is the doctor with his own rules about how to offer sacrifices to Anubis in order to have eternal life.

The pace is slow and there's too much silly banter that features KATHLEEN HARRISON in a role designed to give the audience comedy relief. RALPH RICHARDSON is excellent as a cleric who seems to be a helpful visitor and ERNEST THESIGER is fine as the nervous servant.

The Gothic ambiance is strong with handsome interiors of a house in shadows and the flavor of an "old dark house mystery" is well sustained. Plotwise, there are loopholes and the story only really picks up once Karloff has returned from the grave.

For fans of this genre, this is an interesting film and Karloff's performance is first rate.
How did Karloff do this film if he was under contract with Universal? Did that contract only apply in the US?
