It's the 27th century. 700 years has passed since the apocalyptic events that caused the destruction of human civilization and changed Earth's geography, climate and animal biology forever. After the apocalypse, a new dark age began. Life returned to that of medieval times, although some sporadic remnants of the industrial and computer age survived as well. However, almost all historical and scientific knowledge was lost. That's when the Immortals stepped in. The apocalypse changed their mind about the Game and they decided to give it up for good. They swore an oath to never fight again and to instead save what they can of human knowledge, so that civilization could be rebuilt once again in the future. They formed the society of Jettators or knowledge-keepers and chose Mangus, who possessed the knowledge of architecture, as their first among equals. However, an evil Immortal called Kortan rejected this vow and since everyone else had quit the game under oath, he pronounced himself its winner. He then established his tyrannical realm, enslaved many mortals to be his slaves and formed an army of slave hunters to secure his power. He has ruled unopposed for 700 years and erased the memories of the world before him. However, Mangus has prophesied that one day an Immortal born after the apocalypse will arrive to challenge him and beat him. Therefore, the Jettators spend seven century patiently waiting for such person to appear and give him of her their collected knowledge through a special Quickening ritual, where an Immortal can willingly transfer his or her knowledge to another Immortal without fighting or dying and by doing so give up on his or her immortality and live out the rest of their days as a mortal. This combined knowledge will give the chosen Immortal the necessary power to defeat Kortan and rebuild civilization. For 700 years now they patiently await for this person to emerge. When Kortan orders his ruthless right hand General Arak to bring him new slaves and chooses the small village that belongs to the Dundee clan as the target, Arak raids the place and kills several people there including young Quentin MacLeod and his adoptive mother. The raiders capture many of the townsfolk and eventually leave. That's when Quentin suddenly revives. He's greeted by Immortal Ramirez, who has sensed that the boy is the chosen one and is now there to take him to each of the Jettators as well as tutor him. MacLeod's adoptive feisty kid sister Clyde and her pet Gaul, an animal that looks like a hybrid of ape and dog and belongs to a friendly post-apocalyptic species called Gran, leave with them. Ramirez first goal is to find Mangus, since the knowledge he can give to Quentin besides architecture includes the schematics of Mogonda, Kortan's city fortress from which he rules with an iron first and where Quentin's kidnapped clansmen are imprisoned. However, Quentin might not be quite as ready as Ramirez thinks and they pay a harsh price for it.
