Through his unconscionable actions against others, a sociopath samurai builds a trail of vendettas that follow him closely.
Ryunosuke is a sociopathic samurai without compassion or scruples. When he is scheduled for an exhibition match at his fencing school, the wife of his opponent begs Ryunosuke to throw the match, offering her own virtue in trade. Ryunosuke accepts her offer, but kills her husband in the match. Over time, Ryunosuke is pursued by the brother of the man he killed. The brother trains with the master fencer Shimada. In the meantime, however, Ryunosuke earns the enmity of the band of assassins he runs with, and it becomes a question of who shall face him in final conflict.
I have to say that without question "The Sword of Doom," directed by Japanese filmmaker Kihachi Okamoto from Kaizan Nakamoto's lengthy unfinished novel, is plainly one of the most disturbing martial arts/samurai movies ever made. If it were not a study of pure evil, then it would just be a senseless bloodbath. But the film's star, Tatsuya Nakadai, conveys very little in the way of a personality in his role as the samurai Ryunosuke. Instead, he chooses the quiet route, by letting the camera decipher his many vacant facial expressions. It is quite easy to tell that something deep lurks within the darkness Ryunosuke's soul. What's there is never explained, and that's what really makes Nakadai's performance all the more realistic and chilling. But really, this is one dark, violent, and disturbing picture. Akira Kurosawa never made anything quite like "The Sword of Doom." The story follows Ryunosuke, a master swordsman, after he kills a man during a match, and then steals away the dead man's wife. But in the film's opening sequence, he slays a young woman's grandfather for no reason other than to demonstrate his skill. Later, Ryunosuke remains indifferent to the fact that his new "wife" is miserable and that her son (it's not exactly stated if it's his or her late husband's) is terribly ill and might die. Ryunosuke then joins a group of assassins and it's downhill from there for this character, as the slain man's brother Hyoma (Yuzo Kayama) prepares for a bloody quest of vengeance against him by training with a master swordsman (Toshiro Mifune). Abroad, the shogunate that rules Japan is on the verge of collapse, and he remains indifferent to that as well. I would like to think that "The Sword of Doom" is probably one of the most realistic portrayals of the human soul ever made out of Japan. Ryunosuke is a difficult character to remain attached to, simply because of the subtle hints of madness clear in his expressions. Perhaps the only redeeming quality he has are his masterful sword skills, which instead of using to kill the bad guys, he uses them to cut down innocents, and maybe the occasional undesirable. Most of the women are portrayed as weak or prostitutes (but that's common Japanese in cinema). "The Sword of Doom" concludes with one of the longest and bloodiest samurai showdowns ever filmed. And it also has one of the most abrupt conclusions for a movie of this caliber. It is clear that Ryunosuke is about to take on the world, cutting down one swordsman after the other, until there's none left and it's Armageddon. What exactly the director had in mind with this ending, or whether or not he ever intended to follow it up, remains something for the ages to discover.

10/10 Here, in one of Nakadai's best performances, he plays a young, seemingly evil Samurai who lives by his own moral code. He ruthlessly slays anyone who he thinks should die, and it's hard to say whether his killings are unjust or deserved, even though his actions might seem despicable at first. For example, in the beginning of the film, he encounters an ageing pilgrim praying for a quick death. Upon hearing this, Nadakai's character kills him in one swift move. This scene sets the tone for the rest of the movie.

Nakadai's fighting style echo's his attitude to an extent, it's an ultra defensive style in which he never strikes the first blow. In an iconic scene later on in the film, Mifune's older and wiser samurai tells Nakadai, "The sword is the soul. Study the soul to know the sword. Evil mind, evil sword." In Japanese culture, the sword and style of a samurai could be seen as a window to his soul and "Sword of Doom" beautifully yet brutally echoes this sentiment. In the penultimate scene of the film, Nakadai's samurai is haunted by his past actions and starts to hallucinate, he is clearly a broken man and regrets some of his actions.

The ending of the film is surely a controversial one but I personally loved it. Nothing is resolved, apparently there were sequels planned but they never came to light for one reason or another. Nevertheless, it didn't take away anything from the film and for me it actually added to the mystique and moral ambiguity of Nakadai's character.

Impeccably shot and beautifully choreographed, the film is a feast for the eyes. Nakadai's performance as a self destructive samurai was highly intense and full of emotion, his shift in character alone was astonishing and really displayed Nakadai's talent as a versatile actor. Mifune is also in the film and has his fair share of excellent scenes and lines. In summary, an excellent film that I'd recommend to anyone with a remote interest in Samurai movies.
