Chapter 3 completes The Journey Down series by delivering the same great storyline, humour and puzzles but take a giant step up in lots of places too, to make it a fitting, epic finale to a game that will surprise you when you realise the size of the indie team behind it. The locations and the art are stunning. You might find yourself taking a few minutes just to stare at the screen. As always the voice acting is excellent but this episode adds even more top talent that work together so well. The soundtrack was in danger of being something that couldnt live up to previous chapters with the sad passing of Simon DSouza, but Jamie Salisbury continues the beautifully written soundtrack and, with the addition of a more 80s themed game, comes some very solid tracks that sound like they were directly plucked from that period. The puzzles arent overly hard, and it could be argued that they could be a bit more difficult in places, but they are logical and fit around the story well. The ending to the game is, in the true sense of the word, epic. Ill be very sad to see the back of Bwana and his friends but I feel fulfilled and like that story had enough substance to make me glad it rounded out how it did. A quality game from a very talented team that any adventure game fan should pick up. Definitely get the trilogy if you havent played the others because its all about the story. Kick back and enjoy some humour, beautiful music, stunning art and a great story.. I really enjoyed playing this game, which is valid for all three chapters. I was through after 3.3 hours of playtime, but that's probably because I'm used to such adventure games and know what I'm normally looking for when I'm stuck (which I was really only at one point because I overlooked something). Overall there are not too many locations in each part to visit, so you won't get lost. I can recommend this chapter of the game to anyone who likes point and click adventures, but if you haven't played the first two chapters, start with them of course! I highly appreciate the developer for supporting Linux with a Day-0 release! That's something far more developers could embrace. I didn't notice any bugs at all and the game ran just as smoothly as the prior chapters did. Overall, this game great animations, good music and an amazing voice cast put together, and the story is just lovely. I caught myself at the final cinematic applauding, which I'd usually never do, but the ending was just so well done and funny.. Do not try to alt-tab while in game. It will break something.. TJD Chapter 3 is a pretty great conclusion to Skygoblin's adventure game trilogy, and I'd certainly recommend it to fans of the other two games. Anyone new to the series would probably be best off starting with Chapter One -- the game does summarize some of the previous plot points but it's definitely not a completely self-contained story. The visuals continue to be quite gorgeous (though a few scenes seem a little under-detailed), and the voice acting is, in general, fantastic as well. As with previous TDJ games, there's occasionally some poorly-recorded bits from secondary character dialog, but it's pretty minor in this one. A couple familiar minor characters from previous games unexpectedly pop up, which was great, and the new characters are generally fun and well-written. One of the most immediate changes from the previous games is the overall tone, which is noticeably darker. The series has always had things like violence and government corruption lingering at its fringes, but setting this story in the heart of that corruption has definitely altered the tone. There's actual profanity in this one, reasonably common in fact -- being verbally threatened in-game by an angry Armando Power Company employee feels a bit more dangerous when he's also swearing at you. Your main allies in the game are armed revolutionaries, and St. Armando is beset by crowds of angry protesters. I found myself wondering if the real world's recent politcal upheaval and unrest has influenced this shift. It says something about Skygoblin's writing chops, though, that a puzzle involving a repeatedly-tasered protester comes across as funny rather than disturbing. Another reason for the tone shift is in part due to the passing of their original two games' composer -- the jazzy afro-carribean grooves have largely been replaced by 80s synth and rock. It took me awhile to get used to it, but It was probably wise to pivot rather than try to imitate the previous games' scores with another composer. The change is even well-integrated into the story itself and makes thematic sense, both by the game's setting and the characters you meet. By the end I'd fully come around and it was nice to see the change pay off for the final scenes. In the end, this is a very satisfying conclusion to the series. There's some elements I'm not as fond of -- I'd have appreciated much more time spent in the Underland, for instance -- but it's impressive that Skygoblin's created an ending for the series which delivers.. Too easy puzzles. And I usually don't say this about point and click games. But I just walked this one trough. - Bit a downer to wait a long time for episode three thinking that you'll get to explore some ancient world and then the part 3 is 70% in the city. - 90% of the voice acting was ok, but some parts were just terrible. Also I liked the original demo graphics better. Sometimes too much polishing is not a good thing.. Without a doubt, the polish on this installment is noticeably better (you can tell by the cut scenes). BUT. That ends up not being a good thing. Despite the effort of making things look better, all the charm is lost with the tempo change, over abundance of long exposition, and way too many drawn out cut scenes. Stopped playing once I realized I was spending more time watching cut scenes than figuring out puzzles. Non of which were interesting in my hour of play. For anyone looking forward to exploring the Underland, you know, the place both the last two games were building too, give that idea a pass. Unless there is more to that place later in the game, the Underland is nothing more than a montage at the beginning, and 4 areas/scenes at the start. AND how the heck is all this previously known knowledge of the Underland not mentioned before, showing up now? Its like they knew everything about the place other than door combinations without the journal. Last I recall the Journey down was the only account of anything down there to reach the surface. Its really sad about their team loss, what is just as sad is how it shows in the game. It might look pretty, but it is not the same vision shown to us before. Rock to save the world really? Seems kind of opposite direction than what the saxophone-wizard Simon was. OOOOH know what would have been more cool than a rocker? A saxophone-wizard like artist saving the day instead. I do like one of the big bad people is a spit image of that German PoS Merkel. That said, I might re-buy when this game is at a deep discount, didnt pay more than $5 for either of the other two, regret paying more for this one.. Grande Finale! And it's grand, be prepared! Although a bit on the short side (5h, but I got it at a bundle discount, well worth it), it's tons of fun and radiating the love for this series all the time! Looking forward to the next project of the SkyGoblin guys.. Pros : + Amazing story with nice comedy, even though there's few plot holes + Rich world creation with great lore + Great graphic and art + Fantastic soundtrack/SFX Cons : - Few puzzle/quest are difficult to solve The Journey Down trilogy is truly amazing adventure game and Chapter Three is the best among them, if you liked the prequel, you should play Chapter Three now. If you haven't played the prequel, but like adventure game with rich story and world creation, then you should grab the trilogy now.. Great end to the trilogy! Awesome soundtrack, good voice acting, great art, lots of fun! Puzzles aren't hard on this last chapter, but that's fine considering the things happening at the story. Highly recommended if you like point&click adventures! Hope to find more adventure games from SkyGoblin soon.
