A slacker awakes to find himself weak and wrapped in a webbing; after realizing that the world has been taken over by giant alien insects, he wakes a ragtag group of strangers and together they fight for survival.
Our hero, Cooper, awakes to find himself nauseous, weak and covered in webbing, hanging from the ceiling of an office where, just minutes ago, he started his new job. As he struggles out of his slimy prison he comes face to face with his opponent - a grotesque, powerful and very angry bug. All 3 ft of it. And so begins a hideous, nail-biting, comedic, all-action adventure to find a safe haven while constantly outwitting an infestation of monstrous proportions. As Cooper embarks on his journey, he befriends a ragtag group of survivors including Sara, a feisty determined female. Will they make it to safety before they are picked off one by one? And what other surprises are in store for our group of unlikely heroes?
Disregard the poor reviews....I have seen, and own, hundreds of 'monster horror' films, and this one, which I went into with low expectations (only buying it because it was $2 at a Blockbuster closing)impressed and entertained me very much. Having a very likable lead, in the John Cusack mold, helped greatly, but the effects were more than decent, and the writing was sharp and funny. Many of these type films have cookie-cutter dialog, but I laughed out loud a few times, when the writing caught me off guard. A favorite was when Cooper tells his dad his bold plan to rescue Sara from the hive, to which his dad replies "Let me tell you a little story......YOU'RE AN IDIOT!".....that was so out of the blue, that I burst out laughing, which I don't normally do. Ray Wise's delivery of the line was just right.

So buy the film....it's cheap on Amazon. I just bought a second copy for a movie-loving friend. You could do a LOT worse.....trust me. As a horror monster movie, it is not very scary, however it is abundant in good special effects and feels a little like Cloverfield. Indeed, the origin of the threat is not clear, the situation is also not clear and revealed slowly as the story develops and also the point of view is personal, more first person. No jerky cam, though, and for me that's a plus, too.

I wish the whole situation would have made more sense. That way I wouldn't have had to fight my disbelief so much. But I did enjoy the movie. I wonder why horror script makers move to such great length to create powerful monsters and then later cripple them with ridiculous handicaps. I can buy the bugs that cannot see bit, but they can't interpret shapes by sonar? They don't smell the humans? Especially the annoying cosmetic blonde? Don't they feel heat? How did they survive by sound alone?

Bottom line: Cloverfield with bugs minus the jerky-cam and minus the government intervention.
