1943. With the battle of Stalingrad turning the war against them, the Germans are attempting to bully neutral Turkey into joining the Axis; to this end they have trapped 2,000 British soldiers on Kiros, an island in the Aegean, with only one sea route for evacuation, a sea route commanded by two gigantic German antiship batteries deployed in a massive cliffside bunker on the island of Navarone. Immune to air attack and too much for Allied battleships to suppress, the British muster Keith Mallory, a commando officer who has been working on occupied Crete for nearly two years and who is an expert mountaineer, to ferry a team of British commandos to the only area of Navarone that is not monitored by the Germans, a 400-foot cliff. Greek resistance is to meet the team inland and guide them around German patrols to the area of the German guns. However, the commanding officer of the British team suffers grave injury in the climb and Mallory must take control of the mission, despite clashes with explosives expert John Anthony Miller, who upon the arrival of the night of the raid finds his equipment has been sabotaged, thus exposing a traitor in the team's ranks.
Two powerful German guns control the seas past the Greek island of Navarone making the evacuation of endangered British troops on a neighboring island impossible. Air attack is useless so a team of six Allied and Greek soldiers is put ashore to meet up with partisans to try and dynamite the guns. The mission is perilous enough anyway but are the Germans on the island getting further help too?.
"The Guns of Navarone" from 1961 has an all-star cast including Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, David Niven, Stanley Baker, Anthony Quayle, Irene Papas, and James Darren.

It's 1943, and the Germans want Turkey on their side. They have trapped 2000 British soldiers on an island in the Aegean, Kiros. The only way the men can evacuate is by sea, but there are two massive radar-directed superguns on a treacherous cliffside bunker on the island of Navarone.

The British bring in Keith Mallory (Peck), a commando officer and expert mountaineer to bring a team of British commandos to the only part of Navarone not monitored by the Germans, a 400-foot cliff. Greek resistance will meet the team guide them to the German guns.

During this difficult mission, the men, disguised as fisherman, manage to kill a German patrol but are then shipwrecked on Navarone. Then, while climbing the cliff, Franklin (Quayle) breaks his leg in two places and gangrene sets in. Then Miller's explosives are destroyed, and the men realize they have a traitor.

Very exciting and absorbing film, and the biggest money-maker of 1961, deservedly. The acting is very good, but the actors, with the exception of James Darren, are probably ten years too old for their roles. And Gregory Peck is miscast as a British athletic mountain climber. He does not attempt a British accent, and his German and Greek are dubbed.

It always cracks me up that whomever writes scripts constantly use German in the formal tense, even when talking to subordinates or prisoners, when they more than likely said "du" instead of "Sie." It was fun to hear the German anyway.

As an aside, there is a trivia note that Harrison Ford is the soldier who looks out of the back of a truck during one scene. It's not Harrison Ford, who at the time was living in the midwest and in school. There is a very slight resemblance around the eyes but the shape of the face is all wrong.

Though this movie runs long, you won't notice it. If you haven't seen this movie then you have missed out on one of the top 10 World War 2 movies.

Certainly there are lines in the movie that seem a bit camp (such as Richard Harris' debrief and some of Niven's lines) but overall the rest of the script is topnotch, the actors are some of the best in the business and the story keeps you wanting to watch it every three months.

The beautiful music at the end of the movie (Voyage Home I think its called) is very soothing and fits in just right with the footage.

As the past reviewer mentioned this movie is definitely underrated. I rank it right up there with 12 O'Clock High which is my favorite Gregory Peck movie.

Carl Foreman's visit to Hollywood lengthened to almost a week instead of two days as he had planned. That's because he has been negotiating with Cary Grant about playing the lead in h is next picture, "Guns of Navarone."

Carl brought both the book and script to Cary to read, and hopes to get the valuable Grant name on a deal before he joins his wife, who is vacationing in Italy.

The Massive Power Failure that blacked out new York the other day almost caused producer Carl Forman and three top Manhattan movie critics, to black out, too. Foreman was screening his movie, "Guns of Navarone," for the critics. In one of the last scenes of the film, a German officer gives the command to a battery of cannon to fire at the approaching six destroyers in the Navarone channel. The officer gave the command, the cannons boomed--and, presto, everything went black!
