When news magnate James Reid dies, his son Britt and chauffeur Kato, resentful of Reid's slights, vandalize a graveyard statue. By chance, they also rescue a couple from thugs, but TV reports the vandalism, not the heroism. Britt, thinking he's a genius while relying on Kato's mechanical and kung-fu skills, decides to be a superhero, the Green Hornet, and use his father's paper to play up the bad-guy elements. The reporting on the Hornet upsets LA's DA, who's up for reelection, and the city's real crime boss, Chudnofsky. Plus, how long will Kato suffer in silence, when he has all the skill? Competition for the affection of Britt's assistant, Lenore, brings things to a head.
For starters, I have not watched the original TV show, nor was I familiar with 'The Green Hornet' before seeing this remake. What I can say is that it's a very good film, hardly perfect, but that doesn't give some critics an excuse to call this film 'awful'.

The film is a mixture of comedy and action, with most of the comedy based on superhero movies and the action being slightly over-the-top but incredibly entertaining. A lot of the comedy in this movie is very subtle, the laugh-out-loud moments being a bit rarer than in most comedies.The purpose of this film was to be the opposite of your usual superhero adventure, with the hero being pathetic and helpless without his sidekick, who is a genius in every respect as well as a martial arts expert who can make amazing coffee. The villain, rather than being tough and intimidating, is an insecure laughing stock for his henchman, and someone who can't even create a scary name let alone persona, Chudnofski is by far the funniest and best character in the film.

If you can appreciate the hidden comedy of the film, you should love it. If not, watch it again and pay closer attention. There are plenty of references to the 'Iron Man' movies, (SPOILER) including the the fight scene between the two heroes in the second film being parodied in this film, in a ridiculously long-lasting hilarious fight scene. The middle of the movie did become a bit boring, but this scene did pick up the pace and alter the mood of the film for the third act.

The acting was fantastic all around, with James Franco making a brief but great cameo in the first act of the film. Of course, it's not without issues. If you have seen Kick-Ass or just like superhero movies, there is a big sense of deja vu here, so don't go expecting anything original out of this. The storyline was not all that intriguing, and the only truly decent scenes were when Britt and Kato were both on screen together. Cameron Diaz also had a brief but slightly pointless role in the film.

It's not the fact that the film had any real faults, but the familiarity of it really does hold the film back from achieving it's whole potential. Nonetheless, it's a brilliant entertainer, so please give this a chance before letting the negative reviews put you off forever. I watched "The Green Hornet" with a sense of skepticism. Having grown up with the original TV series, this movie really had some big shoes to fill out. And surprisingly enough, it managed to do so in a good enough way. But there were also aspects of the movie that were less than successful.

First of all, Seth Rogen (playing Britt Reid/The Green Hornet). No, no, no. I know he was involved in directing and writing the movie and all, but he is not chiseled out for an action role of this caliber. I do admire his spirit and enthusiasm, but he is more suited for comedy movies. Seeing him in this role didn't go well with me. He did bring along some comedy, but it didn't work so well in this particular movie.

And the scene at the beginning where Britt Reid was bringing home a woman and they went through the garage and sat in all the cars (showing them off for the audience, actually) in high-speed capture, what was up with that? Already at that point, the movie started to falter and crash.

Jay Chou (playing Kato) certainly had HUGE shoes to fill out after the original role was played by Bruce Lee. And actually Chou did a decent enough job, with good acting and well-choreographed action/fighting sequences. So hats off to him for that.

However, the most memorable person in the movie was Christoph Waltz (playing Chudnofsky). He was fantastic as a villain and worked his role very well and very convincingly. Plus there was also a good sense of humor to his role, and it worked well.

The story told in the movie was fast-paced, captivating and interesting enough to keep you enthralled throughout the entire feature length.

For an action movie, then "The Green Hornet" is actually quite good. But for a follow-up to the legacy of the TV series, the movie is a mediocre attempt with good intentions. Had they cast someone else for Britt Reid, it would have worked much better. Now, I am not saying that Seth Rogen is a bad actor, he was just ill-suited for this role. "The Green Hornet" is good entertainment if you are in for an evening of action, corny one-liners and a trip down memory lane. A violent, clumsy, jokey, badly-plotted and miscast mess.
It's best to let Rogen himself speak about this subject. From WorstPreviews.com: Seth Rogen, writer and co-star of the upcoming The Green Hornet, told Sci Fi Wire that the film will possess elements of both comedy and action. "To me, the two aren't mutually exclusive," said Rogen. "You can have a big action epic with a lot of funny parts." Green Hornet is a big-screen adaptation of the superhero franchise, which was adapted as a popular 1960s television series and was inspired by the original radio program created in the 1930s. Hornet follows the adventures of Britt Reid, a bored playboy who inherits his father's crusading newspaper, the Daily Sentinel. By night he is a masked hero, fighting crime with his sidekick, Kato, who has incredible martial-arts skills. Rogen, whose film projects to date have been primarily comedic in nature, said that the forthcoming update will evoke other action films that feature an undercurrent of humor. "I've seen the early 'Indiana Jones' movies in theaters, and they kill," Rogen said. "There's laughs throughout the whole thing, and it doesn't feel like a comedy per se. It just feels like something that's trying to solicit reactions from the audience, and we think of movies like 'True Lies' and stuff like that. That's more kind of what we're going for with this." Director Michel Gondry also has said this about the film's tone: "It's an action movie with some comedy in it. The action will be fast and furious and the comedy will come from the dynamic between Kato and Britt Reid." Reportedly, he stepped down to work on a superhero spoof comedy starring Jack Black. It's called "Live With Me" by the Rolling Stones.
