Rodney McKay is scouring the city to find ways to reduce power consumption to preserve their lone ZPM for as long as possible. In one room they find a device that zaps McKay before he can switch it off. The result is a super-intelligent and power McKay, whose ego needed no encouraging to begin with. No only is his intellectual capacity heightened, but he can read people's minds and even manages to heal Zalenka's wounds just by touching him. It's not all good news when Elizabeth Weir's research reveals that the device was meant for Atlanteans to use in advance of their ascension - and more importantly that if Rodney doesn't ascend, he will die.
When Rodney uses an Ancient device, he gets special powers, but soon Dr Weir discovers it's a double-handled gift: if he doesn't ascend, he'll die.
Believe it or not, Rodney is my favorite character in Stargate Atlantis. And the small doses of Rodney I get each episode, well, here they've surely fulfilled my desire to see him in action.

It's something of a bottle show: not too many special effects, no aliens whatsoever, it's rather an introspection on all the good and the bad stuff that Rodney's made of. And the evolution in this episode of this particular character, and of the others in relation with him, is unbelievably complex and highly engaging.

Rodney might seem a pain in the ass if looked at superficially, but there's plenty underneath the hood. He's a true superhero, humanized by his overflowing feeling of superiority (which, in this episode, is hinted to be actually the reverse, as a mechanism of defense for a very shy and insecure person - not that anyone watching the series didn't get it by now, but we see him realizing that and it's a feast for us, the theater lovers; the acting is exquisite and the episode is worth watching only for that if nothing else seems interesting).

I don't know what else I could be telling about this episode. It's one of the best episodes of Atlantis thus far in the series, and it's worth watching every minute of it. I feel bad about the few ones that can't stand David Hewlett's character, if they have chosen to skip this episode they deny themselves a great show.
