However, the police arrive too soon and all addicts but one are killed along with the store owner and several police officers. Maggie, is sentenced to death by lethal injection for killing a police officer; however, she wakes up after the execution to find that she has been spared in order to be trained as a government assassin. After a dramatic transformation, she is allowed to leave the training facility and start a new life for herself, on the condition that she always be on call for the government. However, she begins to discover that there is more to life than she had previously thought and soon begins to wish she could escape from her obligation. But the government isn't so easy to quit ...
A young woman, Maggie Hayward (Bridget Fonda), is sentenced to death after murdering a policeman during a botched robbery. While awaiting trial she is approached by a government agent, Bob (Gabriel Byrne), who wants her to join a top secret assassination team. She doesn't cooperate and is executed...or so it seems. She awakes to find herself an unwilling recruit for the government organisation. She still plays hard to get but eventually comes around. With her training done, now she has to put it into practice - killing people, all while, on the surface, living a perfectly normal life.
This IS a really brutal movie-I usually don't like violence in movies but in this case the violence was sort of neccessary for the overall subject at hand. Once I got past that, I really enjoyed this in a way that surprised me because it wouldn't be the type of pic I'd usally watch.

I think Gabriel Byrne is what made this movie. He was great as Bob and the chemistry between him and maggie/Nina was overwhelming. I think this was a movie made good by the cast. I thought Fonda and Byrne were incredible.

I wouldn't call this "dreary" as much as sometimes brutal with alot of violence. Still it's a good movie, I think besides the incredible chemistry between Byrne and Fonda the story was moving and makes you want to know what happens nest.

Harvey Keitel was positively creepy as the Cleaner! There are some really-well- for lack of a better term icky scenes in the movie but the acting is first rate and holds your attention.

There are some negatives to: to much violence that seemed kind of for shock value, after awhile it becomes a bit much:ok we get the idea. The AMMOUNT of shootings, explosions etc detracts from the wonderful acting and powerful story at hand, they could have minimized the brutality A LITTLE.

Also, Gabriel Byrne and Bridget Fonda should have had more scenes together, their chemistry is what made the movie. I understand, looking at imdb comments that this is a remake and I didn't know that before, but although this movie is very engrossing it doesn't get up to 10 status. Stil, it's defintely worth seeing if you have a strong stomach and haven't seen it. When Maggie Hayward is found guilty of murder during a crime, she is sentenced to death by lethal injection. After she is killed she is naturally surprised to wake up in a room to be confronted by a man called Bob. Bob tells her that she is legally dead but that she has been given another chance – to train and then live the rest of her life as an assassin, nameless and without roots. Despite initially resisting the idea, Maggie undergoes the training and is gradually shaped into a sleek, professional killer. However, as the training becomes more intense she comes to rely on Bob a lot more – never an advisable thing in a world of betrayal and murder.

It has been many years since I have seen this film or the remake but, last night, I decided to give this film a try. Sold with the better title of 'The Assassin' in the UK, the film cuts quickly to the chase and, within 5 minutes, we have one dead Maggie on our hands. Seconds later and we find ourselves in a training facility where Maggie goes from not knowing what a computer mouse is to being able to strip and assemble weapons in a flash. The second half of the film sees Maggie out in the real world and doing dangerous missions. The two sections are pretty run of the mill (how many films have we seen a 'training then mission' structure to a film) but I surprised that the training section of the film was not more fun – usually these bits are good fun even if the material is weak. Here the training is too abrupt, unconvincing and, most unfortunately, lacking in a real sense of fun. The mission stage is different but the middle section of the film drags a bit too much and it isn't until the denouncement that it becomes exciting and urgent, only to give way to a poor ending.

The main weakness here is the writing: from big gaps in plot logic, average dialogue and no real characters to get into. The latter is the biggest problem because the majority of the film relies upon us being involved with Maggie and being convinced by her. The supposed complexities in the middle section were ranked null and void to be by a script that didn't care so much about what she was going through as it did about having the odd bang. It is hard to describe but the whole film just seemed very, well, second rate and everything from the script to the action sequences really could have done with a great deal of polish and extra effort to make them rise above the standard of 'average' but it never really does. It is a sign of the film being in trouble when even the remake's famous restaurant scene lacks tension and comes off just as a series of empty bangs.

The cast try hard and mostly do actually do pretty well despite not having great material to work with. Fonda didn't totally convince me as a drug fiend nor as a sudden expert in assassination but, once I was over the sudden sea change I got into her and she did well with the emotions despite not having the material to do it with. Bryne is quite cool and he has a uneasy presence about him that makes him good in the role – but his supposed affection for Maggie is nowhere to be seen in the script and he can't make it out of thin air. Mulroney is average – just meant to be a snotty love interest but not given anything to show why they fell for one another. Bancroft and Ferrer are both OK and add a bit of class and Keitel makes a sinister cameo at the end and does presents a face to the brutal organisation that we're told Maggie works for. Like the material, none of them really do anything special but they all do enough to get by.

And that's the trouble with the whole film – it is nothing special and is merely competent but no more than that. I won't compare it to the original because I haven't seen it for ages but, on its own, it is average. It has no real heart to the story or the characters and the action scenes mostly lack tension and pace – even the famous restaurant scene. Has just enough going for it to be worth seeing once but really it is just an average remake.
