Frank Darrbo is a hapless fry cook. When his wife Sarah falls off the wagon and dumps him for Jacques, a drug dealer, Frank tries to get her back by reporting her kidnapped, grabbing her from Jacques' car, and wailing for her to return. After watching Christian TV and having a vision, he becomes a superhero to fight evil. He sews a costume, finds a weapon (a pipe wrench) and looks for crimes to stop. He has problems: his wrench inflicts real injury, so the cops want him for being a vigilante, his sense of boundaries is flawed, and Jacques' gang has guns. Libby, a clerk at a comic book store, becomes his sidekick, and it's time to go save Sarah. What chance do they have?
After his wife falls under the influence of a drug dealer, an everyday guy transforms himself into Crimson Bolt, a superhero with the best intentions, but lacking in heroic skills.
I LOVE this film, and when i say i LOVE, i mean LOVE. So much so i've even named my account after this film :) Frank D'arbo (Rainn Wilson) is a miserable, lonesome man who struggles to find any positive points, except two, about his life. One was marrying his wife Sarah (Liv Tyler), the other, pointing a policeman in the right direction of a fleeing suspect. When Sarah is led back into a life of drugs by the drug-lord Jacques (Kevin Bacon), Frank is devastated. Frank later has an epiphany. To become a superhero after being inspired by the cheesy biblical hero 'The Holy Avenger' (Nathan Fillion). Frank pursues his idea and becomes 'The Crimson Bolt' and is later joined by the crazed young comic book store employee, Libby A.K.A Boltie. Together Frank and Libby set to do one thing, get Sarah back.

Rainn Wilson plays his role with perfection. He delivers a funny, fresh and touching performance throughout and really makes you root for his success. Ellen Page also fits in her role as a psychotic young woman perfectly. Her fearlessness and strange behaviour really make you wonder why she isn't in some mental asylum, yet she executes it with a great comedic value.

Super needs to be approached with the right sense of humour. The dialogue, especially the prayer scene, was very cleverly written to progress the story, to make you laugh, to touch you and even to make you empathise with Frank. But again, you need to have the right sense of humour.

If you have the chance to see this movie, or if your even thinking about ordering it, DO. It was well worth the £10 or so i spent on it. I absolutely hate Rainn Wilson; the dude is so annoying and rarely funny. I generally find if his name is affixed to a project, it is a pretty sure bet I will not like it. Although this heuristic has generally worked for me, Super is actually a pretty enjoyable film. They consistently go one step further than what is expected, from the very un-PC language coming out of Juno's mouth, to the brutal violence that often comes across in this weird ambivalent medium between justified and victimizing. This is one of the only roles I can think of where Ellen Page has a highly sexualized role, and its not that the gaze upon her is sexualized, but the character itself is just super horny all the time. Sean Gunn's constant bumbling throughout the film is very funny, and Kevin Bacon is a very good mix of bad and friendly. The whole film operates in this very gray area where nothing is so obvious, even the core arc of Wilson's wife being "kidnapped" is because she wants drugs, not because she is being physically detained.

The one problem I have with the film is it only employs black actors to fulfill black stereotype roles. The co-worker who is really lewd and lazy; the street-corner drug dealer; and finally, the drug king-pen who wants to give Liv Tyler his "finest brown." I get the feeling from these stereotypes that the writing crew were all white males. Some might say this is supposed to capture some real life situations that are simply tough to admit, but the film really did not need to place people in stereotypically ascribed roles. The heroin could have been black, and the street drug dealer could have been white. Whatever.

From all the Christian iconography, I figured I would dislike the film, but in the end, it does not come across as complete proselytizing. Nor does it come across as pure satire. So something is going on there I will not try to uncover. Gunn successfully shifts between celebrating violence and mourning it, but his handling of emotional evolution is clumsier; he seems particularly out of his depth in the film's mawkish ending. But Page is a revelation: There isn't another gorgeous twentysomething actress working today who could more convincingly reveal sexual bravado to be simultaneously silly and creepy.
