A film is being made about the Saint and the producer Byron Ufferlitz wants him to play himself, to the annoyance of Orland Flane, the contracted leading man. When Ufferlitz is murdered Orland is the prime suspect but the Saint finds out that many of the cast and crew also had good reason to see him out of the way.
At the London Airport, a premature Press release awaits the Saint who is welcomed by the journalists as the new glamorous protagonist of Byron Ufferlitz' new movie. The film will be based on Simon Templar's' life and the Saint will be playing himself in a real-life adventure, a role that was taken away from Orland Flane. However, when Ufferlitz is found dead at his desk with the picture of the promising young actor Trilby Andrews in his hands, Inspector Teal will have to check both Flane's and the Saint's alibis, even though many have hated the manipulative producer. Who knows anything about this Trilby Andrews?
STARRING THE SAINT is a light, jokey, self-referencing episode of the show, in which an unscrupulous producer wants to make a series about Simon Templar in which our hero stars - as himself! Various disgruntled folk end up involved, leading to violence and retribution. The most interesting part is the presence of the ever-glamorous Jackie Collins as a femme fatale of sorts.
