Good story, MoaCube never dissapoints when it comes down to visual novels.. Tags: Adventure - VN - Visual Novel Additional Tags: Delete Local Content & Remove from Library TLDR: Narrative is split among multiple protagonists. There were occasional typos and engine issues with appearing text. Quality of writing failed with uneven tones for the faux period fantasy era.. Honestly, I think it's too linear and too benign, not much happens in the first 30 minutes or so to keep you interested for the rest of it. A lot of ready mediocre writing and making choices without really understanding the importance of the choices you make.. this game is sensational! the art is a breath of fresh air and has improved a lot since cinders (and it was really good back then, too) though it still keeps the same vibe that set it apart from everything else at the time. the story is really rich, the characters are very nuanced and everything is so extremely well-written - it's a delight to read! i was especially glad about how the romance subplots were handled - they are completely optional and take a backseat, only developing in the measure the main story allows them to, feeling completely natural and as delightful to read as the rest of the game. i still haven't worked on getting more endings, but one playthrough is enough to say that this was money well spent. if you like visual novels, this is a definite must, and even if you don't, the beautiful art and fantastic setting and plot might convince you to give this a shot.. His is hands down one of my favourite visual novels. The world building is amazing, the characters all have depth of both personality and personal history and their motivations generally make sense and are believable. The art work, which drew me in the most, is absolutely breathtaking, and the character designs are varied and beautiful. There's a nice mix of races which you don't always see and some variaton of body types, making it feel more real. The storyline is really compelling and it was an utter joy to go through multiple times to get all the endings and see the different dynamics you could invoke between characters. This piece has a real lasting effect on me as a story, honestly I wish it were a book I could buy too! Definitely recommend if you like beautiful art, realistic characters and a compelling story.. Shoehorned sexytime infront of a madman's ghost: Solstice is a strange little title. It boasts a pretty narrative set in an established world, well-sculpted dialogue and fitting music. Some of the character interactions are a bit strange (they animated a couple of kiss scenes, for instance, which feel like they're thrust together with the same casual comfort as the others gesticulate), and I feel that some of the scenes could be more to the point. Has most of the technical systems I'd expect in a modern VN, although it's a bit limited on save spaces and I think the skip feature a bit too minimal - if you're looking for completion% you'll be a bit let down. The autoplay is nice and most of the time you can view previous dialogue (although there are some unwarranted cut-offs around dramatic action). The subtle "variants" on the endings as a mark of accomplishment aren't really my thing; a good ending disrupted by an extremely early dialogue choice seems unkind to the player. Further, a lot of the recycled dialogue in these slight variations is considered "new" to the player, and hence unskippable, making the gameplay akin to Clicker Heroes. There's something silly about imposing an emotional compass as visual novel choices: direct, consequence-orientated actions described as such always seems the most appropriate to me. I think Solstice's conversational prompts are a tad too cryptic in the context of 'absolute' completion. For a single playthrough however, they offer enough for you to feel mildly involved in the storyline. I'm having enough fun that I'd consider recommending it as a good example of the Western VN - and depending on what themes you're after, this might do a uniquely good job - but if I had to choose something to represent that geographical subgenre it'd sooner be VA-11 Hall-A or KS.. I played Cinders from the same devs a while back and enjoyed it a lot. And while I definitely recommend Cinders, the writing in Solstice feels more fully realised and sophisticated. The sprites, background and sound design are beautiful. I'm most of the way through the different routes and I almost don't want it to end. The only criticism I have is regarding the non existent volume controls. That would be great, but its kind of a nitpick. Overall, this game is great. I'm looking forward to whatever moacube does next.. A really excellent visual novel. I've only gotten one out of four possible endings so far but I'm revving up for the next playthrough, probably with a guide, seeing as how I made what seems like the worst choice every time. Beautiful music and art, though the sprite animations could sometimes be a bit uncanny valley. The dialogue was decent; scenes with a lot of flirtation were sometimes inadvertently hilarious, there were some odd colloquialisms that seemed out of character, and sometimes conversation could be stilted, but nothing stood out too much and it was all in all very well done. Other reviews have noted the issues with volume control already. The music is great enough that I didn't mind, but any scene with Sem in his kennels was littered with barking dogs that could have been toned down or reduced. The last two chapters were much stronger than the first three, imo. Pacing, events, options were all much more tightly paced and I definitely felt some real conflict and ambivalence--just like the characters did. On another note, the game has an unusual mechanic that switches you back and forth between the perspective of two playable characters, Yani and Galen. I'm not sure how well that works from a narrative point, but it allows for some twists to be particularly and viciously effective, which I really enjoyed.. The artwork is beautiful, the music is too loud and cheerful, the characters are annoying and all are pompous idiots, the story is so-so, the detective plotline is nonexistent, the humour is crude, the drama is far-fetched, the thriller is a joke. This game reminded me why I don't play visual novels, at least made by western developers.. Not only does this game have a good (albeit dark) story, believable characters and decisions that actually matter, it also has a lot to its value with a huge number of endings. The only thing that irks me, though, is one particular mystery that simply makes no sense and feels like it was added mostly for the shock value. You'll know it when you see it, trust me. Otherwise, it's a great game.
