I really wanted to like this game. I really enjoy visual novel type games, games where you get to chose what you want to say or how you want to behave. Sadly this game is extremely slow. I played it for over an hour and basically nothing happened. I was falling asleep waiting for anything to happen. The story just doesn't manage to take off. Maybe if I somehow managed to sit through 5+ hours of slow chitchat between characters I don't really care about the story would start to pick up, but sadly this game will stay in my mind somewhere close to game of thrones, where I just couldn't get myself to care about any characters and stopped watching after Sean Bean's character died. That's not a spoiler. BUT! If you enjoy slow stories, give it a go! I'm not saying it's bad game, I'm just saying it's not for people who like it when stuff happens within the first hour of a game.. Great music, mostly great characters and a great story. The romance options kind of suck with the available partners being pretty meh. Solving the mystery isn't a lot of fun, if I'm honest. Cinders was better in this regard by providing information that allowed the player to make rational deductions and choices. Here, while everything that happens certainly makes sense in retrospect, it mostly feels like an oldschool CYOA, where the results of your choices seem largely random. I tend to rate choice systems in VNs by how much I feel like I need to save-u2665u2665u2665u2665u2665 at every decision point. In that regard, I'd say that Solstice is definitely better than average, but well, as I said, it's no Cinders. Still, overall, the story is enthralliing, and I had a good time with it. Definitely worth picking up while it's on sale.. Great game. - So many possibilities that you might get a little overwhelmed. - Interesting story and many layers. - Great art.. Definitely worth picking up while it's on sale.. A visual novel with interesting story and complex characters. I got a good 5+ hours play out of it, and saw a couple of the endings. The artwork is beautiful.. This game presents itself as a game about treasure and mystery, but is really a somewhat unclimactic and underdeveloped whodunnit. Whodunnits can be fun, but the issue with this game is that it has you collect information about people as if you are going to use it to some purpose (which takes up a good portion of the game), but you never do and it makes it all feel like a waste of time. There's magic but it's almost like an afterthought, there's politics but you play as almost powerless characters who can't change anything except by killing everyone, there is the mysterious kala but it's written off as a meaningless aside. In addition, instead of allowing you to find clues and eliminate suspects, the game just outright tells you who didn't do it and narrows the list down to a select few for you. Who wants to be a detective with no real intrigue or important discoveries to be made and with a verdict practically handed down for you? Only about three of your choices really make an impact, since most just change the dialogue slightly. Also, none of the characters are redeemable and none of them are given time to grow or change which made the story seem stagnant. In short I would NOT reccomend buying this at full price, if you must try it, wait for a sale. It really needs more plot development.. It's not bad, I guess. This is the first time I've played an interactive novel of this kind (I'm used to TellTale). There's a lot of small talk going on, so I advise you set the text speed settings to 'instant' or you'll be in for a long, loooong experience. Also, I don't know if anyone else had this problem, but to me the flashing of the entire screen when something sudden or noteworthy happened felt more like an epileptic seizure waiting to happen than a real addition to the suspence or plot. Brownie points for the main characters not being the usual white mary-sue/awesome john. Still, I wouldn't recommend it at full price. I think I got it with a humble bundle and it wasn't bad pers, just a bit more shallow than I had hoped. This was not for me. *update: I played through twice, and even though I'm usually an achievement farmer, I won't be playing to find out about the other endings because I honest to vod stopped caring.. A beautiful game yet taking next to no disc space (some now take too much.) Being so well written to the point it adds humor while being realistic to how much would be used in the real world. Also having a story that makes it very unclear at the beginning and unravelling it by using two characters point of views is a nice and unique way of piecing the strings together to find out how your choices impact what you do. Great work on this master piece Moacube as I only tend to review games that have really given a nice impact on the atmosphere and the story so thank you for bringing this jem to us and I hope you continue to have success and maybe even bring us a continuation to this story be it before or after what happens.. Degenerate.. quot;Solstice" is an amazing experience. a gorgeous visual novel with a staggering amount of choices and alternative dialogue (you'll know when you come across a point where you could've heard something different when a little branch appears in the upper right hand corner). Definitely worth replaying to take on different goals/ personalities and see what unfolds. It's very interesting to play as two characters (and you can choose how closely they work together). They both have distinct personalities, which makes them interesting to learn about, alongside the NPCs. I appreciate the helpful journal that keeps track of the NPCs & important points - makes it easier for replay as well.
