About This Game

Shiver is a beautiful and chilling point-and-click horror adventure from Kowai Sugoi Studios. As you explore the recently closed Windy Oaks National Park, you must rely on your wits and bravery to conquer challenges and search for rescue. Spanning the course of one captivating hour, you will attempt to unravel the mysteries of the park and escape with your body intact.

In the early 1990's, in a time before mobile phones and the Internet, you find yourself travelling to visit your aging father in a remote retirement home. On the way, you find yourself stranded in the strangely abandoned Windy Oaks National Park: a new park founded on land donated by the Samstone Mining Company as an act of goodwill after a catastrophic sinkhole accident. Using your wits and tenacity, you must figure out a way to contact help and escape, before the park consumes you.

I played through the game in 30-40 minutes, there was a technical issue that I had to resolve with the unity game engine, and there was not a sense of a complete story. This reminded me of one small part of a larger game, as it teased me about a much wider world that was never explored. There was only a dozen "rooms" to explore, and there were about the same number of interactable objects.

It would be nice if there was a donate button on steam, so developers could make these "proof of concept" games, and we could give them a buck or two for furthering their efforts. Because a game like this just simply cannot be compared to some other point and click games that can be bought for a few dollars more. Even when it is on sale, I feel kind of disappointed with the experience, even though I was ready for a short game after reading the reviews.

And didn't you just see someone -or something?- move out of the corner of your eye?

The game's atmosphere is decently creepy, although the word 'horror' in the game's description is not accurate. There are three slight jumpscare-type moments in the game and that's it for 'horror'.

Shiver<\/i>'s graphics are quite beautiful for an indie game this short and simple. There is no background music, but I didn't feel the game needed it: the ambient sound of the howling wind sufficed to set the atmosphere. There are a few lines of voice-over narration, which are rendered decently enough.

Gameplay is typical point-and-click adventuring, meaning you collect items to use on objects in the game world in order to advance in the game. Sometimes, you first have to combine two useless items in your inventory to create a useful item.

Shiver<\/i>'s game world is tiny and there aren't a lot of items to interact with, so it only takes 30 to 45 minutes to complete the game. Weighed against the price tag of \u20ac1.99, I cannot recommend this game. It feels like a demo to show people the basic gameplay of a typical point-and-click adventure game, so they can decide whether or not the genre is something they might like and then move on to full-fledged point-and-click adventure games.

If you're familiar with the genre, though, you won't find anything new in Shiver<\/i>. If you can buy it for a quarter or so, or if it comes in a bundle, I would suggest playing through the game for the hell of it.
