While many outside the craft would consider only the worth of giving what are generally beautiful items of turned wood, there is also the knowledge and community aspects that fill a woodturner's life. Woodturning is an art and craft that consists of skills that are largely self taught, even in this day of internet instruction; readily accessible books, DVDs and tapes; and woodturning organizations. Still it is necessary to practice the skills in order to learn them but because so many woodturners are self taught there seem to be a myriad of ways to accomplish almost anything at the wood lathe.

All of this can be shared and one of the great ways of breaking the solitary bound of the workshop is to take some time to give instruction to an aspiring woodturner. While not unique to the craft there is also the almost compulsive desire on the part of most woodturners to both teach and learn from one another. Giving is also done as one would assume, by the distribution of turned items to friends and family.

This is often done as part of the wonder that a woodturner realizes when the first few pieces are made and later when project samples start to gather in the shop they are regarded as being a ready made gift supply. One of the interesting aspects of woodturning in light of the present push toward environmental causes is the use of firewood and land fill wood in making woodturned objects. The cost of the gift is low but the skill given is personal and the benefit of the gift is to the giver, the receiver and the environment.

A third aspect of the opportunity to give is often overlooked but extremely rewarding. Many organizations in a woodturner's community will have periodic auctions to raise money for worthwhile causes. Small items for door prizes and larger ones for auctioning encourage support for the cause and allow the turner to be part of the support itself. Raffles for an item will often bring in far more money than the dollar worth of the piece and all parties benefit.
