Undersecretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt resigns to form a volunteer militia unit called "The Rough Riders" to fight in the Spanish-American War.
In 1898, the U.S. Government decided to intervene on the side of the Cuban rebels in their struggle against Spanish rule. Assistant Navy Secretary Theodore Roosevelt decides to experience the war first hand by promoting and joining a volunteer cavalry regiment. The regiment, later known as the Rough Riders, brings together volunteers from all corners of the nation and all walks of life. When Roosevelt and his men finally land on Cuba, they face ambush, intense enemy fire, and a desperate, outnumbered charge up a defended hill.
I don't understand Ted Turner. He admits he a "socialist" and demonized old B&W movies by "colorizing". Yet he can front movies like Gettysburg and Rough Riders. I call that an enigma. This movie is not only inspiring but thoroughly enjoyable. Berringer plays TR well! You understand how TR's voice and manner was a bit out of step with the regular's. However, you grew to respect him as a leader because he did his best to become a leader.
This is truly a great film. Well done by all. Writing, production, acting. Incredible!!!!! I want to see a director's cut on DVD of this film!!!!! Busey was fantastic as Joe Wheeler and Sam Elliott, as always, does a fantastic job. His Bucky O'Neill was very well done. We can never have enough Sam Elliott westerns!!! We need more Sam! I give this film the highest of ratings! It is a must see by all! Thanks to the vision of the great John Milius, we have another film that salutes and pays honor to our veterans! Get this film out on DVD right away!!!!! Uncut, trailers, and the Making of...documentary. All the fans are begging for a DVD of this monumental motion picture!
