First of all, if you're a fan of the Infinity series, you'll definitely be interested in this game. But even if you're not, if you're a fan of games with a lot of story and sci-fi, you'll enjoy it. Personally I found the story kind of dragged a lot of the time, but it was still good. A lot of the plot points are infuriatingly obvious, but you have to bear in mind that the characters don't see everything that you do. The Xtend episode felt like a complete waste of time to me, it was 90% repeated content that isn't flagged as read so you can't skip it without changing the settings. The rest of it was really centred around romantic subplots, which I can understand people enjoying but personally I wasn't interested.. Absolutely incredible in every sense of the word. Root Double is one of the best visual novels currently on steam at time of writing and it is WELL worth picking up. As you can see from my play time it's a pretty sizable read but in a good way. Root Double has an excellent story, great presentation and sounds (with pretty nice sound design as well) and some of the BEST characters I think I have ever seen in a visual novel. Root Double's strongest points are by far its characters. They're incredibly well developed, likable and memorable. The story itself is excellent too, I won't go into it much more than the steam description says but just know that there is far more to it than meets the eye. The pacing is pretty solid as well. While the game can slow down at points with its pacing it is nowhere near as bad as the pacing of other vn's such as ever17. While Ever17 is more of a stop, go, stop, go pacing affair Root Double, while slowing down at points never really comes to a screeching hault at all. If you're looking for a solid visual novel though with great pacing, great characters and an interesting plot then pick this one up. Don't listen to those people who say that Root B is trash and boring (the slower pacing of Root B manages to pay off big time later on believe me), just play this VN. It's well worth your money and time believe me.. First and foremost, i'd like to say this: Do not be deceived by this Visual Novel. Root Double tells a story divided in four parts, through the viewpoints of two protagonists: Watase, the firefighter and Natsuhiko, a high school student capable of using ESP powers like telepathy and such. The game initially ropes you in with a very engaging and well written survival scenario, in which several characters trapped inside an underground laboratory try to survive after a nuclear meltdown occurs and the whole place is locked down to prevent the radiation from leaking outside. This part is actually very entertaining to read, as it feels like a fast paced survival thriller. Then everything starts falling apart as you get to the second scenario, Root Before. The game switches to a high school setting as you see the events that took place before the incident. Seeing what led to the events that happen in the first part sounds interesting on paper, but the game's pace slows to a crawl as it forces you to read through hours upon hours of slice-of-life with poorly developed characters that i frankly couldn't care less about. Even the single possibly redeeming factor of this scenario, a relatively well built-up plot twist that was supposed to have some emotional weight behind it, is completely wasted as the game promptly turns the entire twist meaningless mere moments after it happens. And sadly, it doesn't get better from here. The game's final scenario is just a long series of flashbacks one right after the other, with essentially nothing actually happening in-between. The story's main conflict has a very unsatisfying conclusion and the ending itself is rather overly idealistic and generally dissappointing. As such, I'd like to stress that you should not be deceived by this VN's strong start, because that's literally all it has going for it. Only dissappointment awaits after those initial 15 hours, and as you can see from my playtime, that's not even a third of the reading you'll be doing if you stick around until the end.. Root Double scores 9 out of 10 from me. Most of the time the story didn't really surprise me - not even close when you compare it with the shock I experienced reading through epics like Ever 17 or Remember 11, especially Remember 11 - and if you pay attention it's easy to realize what the many hidden truths. Art wise, it's not special but definitely well made. Music, same impression. The final song at the end is certainly beautiful, but I find the OP Song Terminus from Dsyfunctional Systems to be far more effective and touching. Systems. The Sense Sympathy System is kind of troublesome to use but ties in very well with the plot Is it worth full price?? Hell yeah it is,because you can read this VN for around 60-80 hours.. Would recommend this VN Unlike other Vn's this actually has a deep story line going with it. The opening Route A grabs you as you are pushed in an environment where confusion reigns for both you and the protagonist. Slowly it shows you its hand that it is holding but always something else is out there that you just are dying to know. The plot twists and turns leaving you on the edge of your seat. Combine this with well fleshed out characters and you know will become invested. It is possible to compare this Vn to the first Resident Evil movie where you and the main character are thrust in an unknown enviroment. The game consists of 4 Routes A B C D where all Routes are amazing except for B. Route B has wayyy to many flashbacks that slows the thrilling rollercoaster almost to a complete stop. Dig through B and you find the end of B to be exciting and both C and D very rewarding. Also enjoyble are the sheer amount of different scenes, it never feels like it is reusing and reusing the same scenes. Excellent voice actors that actually read most of their lines opposed to start of on a 50 line inner monologue. Music works well here to build and keep tension high. I can recommend this Sci/fi VN to lovers of serious stories, free from "airhead" characters and conversation.. What is a Visual Novel? People like me see them as interactive books or something closer to interactive theater rather than a video game. This genre is popular in Japan and slowly getting popularity from western audience. What it might be surprising for some people is pricing of games like this. Pricing of top VN might be close to AAA titles what could surprise players unfamiliar with this genre. If you never played/read VN before I can assure you that this title is a good place to start. Just make sure that you start playing Root After first. Root Before answers some of the questions in Root After at the very beginning and you want to avoid that. Root Double - Before Crime * After Days is the VN title that surprised me in the most positive way. In my humble opinion, this VN is underrated even among fans of this genre. When you start the game you are waking up into world in year 2030 at LABO, a giant scientific research facility built by a lake on the outskirts of Rokumei City where an incident occurs. In result, you are trapped inside this facility and You will be facing lots of dangers. You will be playing as Watase Kasagi an amnesiac rescue captain and you have to survive during lockdown. After clearing this route you will play as Natsuhiko Tenkawa as he goes through incidents as well as his life the week before we get to know more about this future world and why certain things are happening inside the LABO. The story itself is well-written, there are interesting twists, character development, lots of endings - 39 (bad, normal, good) with impressively executed final route. This VN could read even someone who is not interested in that kind of games. I think that RD makes a great first VN. At the beginning I explained more or less how VN looks like and what is unique in Root Double that there is no answers which players select. Instead, you will be using Senses Sympathy System (SSS). During the gameplay you will have to make a choice how much you trust each character and this choice will affect the direction of the game. The visual production value of Root Double is top-quality. Sprites, CGs and backgrounds, all look great and visual effects are put to good use frequently. Music is also good quality, but it lacks some memorable tracks. Very few productions feature the number of intriguing mysteries and revelations hidden within its depths and it takes the time to get them all but I found that time definitely worth it Pros: Great story for anybody, Interesting characters that develop during the game, Well-designed art (Sprites, CGs and background), Multiple endings with great executed final route, Cons: SSS is unique but may confuse players.. Really recommended if you loved Infinity series, directed by same person.. Really good and interesting story. Can recommend it for sure.
