In 208 A.D., in the Han Dinasty of China, the tyrannic and greedy Prime Minster Cao Cao forces the reluctant Emperor Han to declare war against the kingdoms of Liu Bei and Sun Quan in the South of China. Cao Cao heads with a mighty army of one million soldiers and attacks Liu Bei. His advisor and war strategist Zhuge Liang heads to South in a diplomatic mission trying to convince Sun Quan to join force with Liu Bei against the powerful warlord. When Zhuge Liang meets the viceroy Zhou Yu, he succeeds in his assignment with the alliance of the two kingdoms against Cao Cao. The armies fight against each other in many battles until the final one in Red Cliff where guile, knowledge and strategy prevail.
The first chapter of a two-part story centered on a battle fought in China's Three Kingdoms period (220-280 A.D.).
Recap: Cao Cao has through ruthless wars become the prime minister of China, and by controlling the emperor, it's true ruler. Only two regions, lead by Liu Bei and Sun Quan, oppose him. Cao Cao collects his vast army and leads it south. Bei's and Quan's armies are greatly outnumbered. They decide to make a stand at the fort of the Red Cliff. But they will need all the cunning from their leaders to survive the epic battle that must come.

Comments: John Woo has directed this movie, and even though Woo has been directing movies in Hollywodd for a few years, he has returned to China with Chi Bi, The Battle of the Red Cliff. Woo has not only returned to the country but also to the storytelling typical of Chinese movies. Chi Bi, which is more or less based on an old Chinese legend, contains all the classic element of a Chinese epic.

The scenery is stunning, the armies vast and it got a big cast. There are some real big battles, with a lot of extras along with the main characters. It is warfare in a movie on a grand scale. Unfortunately is also got the typical slow pace. Therefore a war epic like Chi Bi actually gets a little dull and certainly feels long at times. Fortunately it got a good ending, with a quicker pace, so that is not the last thing I think of.

There are a few characters that offer a little extra, especially the character Zhuge Liang, as he also brings a little edge of humor and finesse. Otherwise the characters are rather typical, and not bringing something extra.

In all it is a good movie, but a quicker pace, or a shorter runtime would have helped.

6/10 I saw the UK 2 and a half hour version. Parts 1 and 2 with tiger hunting - sorry, did not see it here. A very powerful war movie with a blitzgrieg of action - both collective and individual fighting - which is strictly Asian in composition, except there are very recognizable elements from other western films, eg the sun on shields from 'Solomon and Sheba,' and the cavalry racing around squares a la 'Waterloo.' Acting is good, script does not hang about (but it was the edited version), and the parallels with China in the thirties well worked. But a little more character and showing thought processes could have been added, because some of the minor generals only get to grunt and slash whereas Cheung and Kaneshiro get to emote lots as they try to bring down Chiang Kai Shek - sorry Cao Cao. Female leads get in on the action but look pretty and not a lot else, even if a good strip scene sees one of them reveal the enemy's camp drawn on her underwear! At last good to see real action instead of comic book CGI a la Hollywood, with a cast of thousands, good models and some hardly noticeable CGI. Well worth seeing!
Any war picture in which the heroine stalls the villain with a quiet, painstaking tea ceremony until the wind shifts direction and the good guys can firebomb the bad guys into oblivion is too ineffably Zen not to love.
Due to the Cinematograph Films (Animals) Act 1937 scenes containing violence to animals have to be cut in the UK. Therefore both versions, the international cut and the original cut - both available on DVD in the UK - were censored accordingly. In order to make the whole project much more attractive for international audiences, an International Version was created, that features both Red Cliff movies cut into one movie. Producer Terence Chang said the following: "We wanted to make a Hollywood blockbuster in Chinese that would appeal to non-Asian audiences as well. We worked very hard to create a version of the film that maintains the integrity of the action and character development of the story, while excising some of the cultural details that could be considered unnecessary for Western audiences not intimately familiar with the historical mythology."
