A mysterious woman rides into town with vengernce in her heart and soul. She enters into the town owners entertaining game - a game of fast hands and faster fingers. The game is his greatest love and he always wins. Can this woman be the hope for this godforsaken town?
Ellen, an unknown female gunslinger rides into a small, dingy and depressing prairie town with a secret as to her reason for showing up. Shortly after her arrival, a local preacher, Cort, is thrown through the saloon doors while townfolk are signing up for a gun competition. The pot is a huge sum of money and the only rule: that you follow the rules of the man that set up the contest, Herod. Herod is also the owner, leader, and "ruler" of the town. Seems he's arranged this little gun-show-off so that the preacher (who use to be an outlaw and rode with Herod) will have to fight again. Cort refuses to ever use a gun to kill again and Herod, acknowledging Cort as one of the best, is determined to alter this line of thinking ... even if it gets someone killed ...

This little cult classic was unfairly overlooked when released, probably because Stones name was over the title. If you remember, this was a time when she released stinker after stinker, so it's understandable people stayed away. I was interested to see how Raimi would handle the then flagging western genre, and he injects new life into it, thanks to some amazing lighting and camera-work.

The story and narrative is simple, but the characters that we have are delicious, and all have their own traits. Stone is okay, as is Crowe and Dicaprio. But Hackman owns this film in a big way. It's as if he's taken his little Bill character and added a pantomime twist to him.

He's ridiculously over the top and commands every scene he's in.

It's a fantastical flight of a movie, with some fine scenarios and a great final fifteen minutes. If you haven't seen tis Gem, catch it. it's well worth it. Like the western "Wild Bill" that also came out around this time, this is a pretty wild, almost cartoon-like western. It has many pluses and minuses.

GOOD - Great sound, interesting camera angles and very stylishly shot. The visuals and audio make it interesting alone. Add a simple but interesting story filled with wild cartoon-like characters and you have a fun, fast-moving film. Western purists will hate the movie because it's filled with over-the-top characters. The most interesting, I thought, was Gene Hackman as the villain and Russell Crowe as the good-guy "preacher" named "Cort." Sharon Stone's character, "Ellen," is very reminiscent of the one she played in "The Specialist," a movie which came out the previous year in which - as in this movie - revenge is her main motive.

BAD - This is only bad if you are religiously-inclined. The "preacher" in here is questionable as such. No real preacher uses the Lord's name in vain which Crowe did twice here. His theology also is not Biblically, more like clueless Hollywood stereotypes. Also, there was a bit too much of the feminist slant in here. Then again, since Stone co-produced the film, it's not surprising. Actually, her character - especially when she begins to soften a bit - is interesting, too.

OVERALL - Despite the usual bias, the movie is fun to watch and entertaining. Ms. Stone's presence nicely underscores the genre-bending tactics of Sam Raimi, the cult director now doing his best to reinvent the B-movie in a spirit of self-referential glee. Mr. Raimi is limited by a sketch mentality, which means his jokes tend to be over long before his films end. But his tastes for visual mischief and crazy, ill-advised homage can still make for sly, sporadic fun.
In order to exact revenge on her father's killer, ruthless gunfighter John Herod (Gene Hackman), tough lady gunfighter Ellen (Sharon Stone) rides into the small, desert town of Redemption, which is basically "ruled" by Herod. Herod has arranged for a gun-fighting competition where two people duel and the winner goes on to the next round of competition until only two people are left standing. The Quick and the Dead is based on a script by British screenwriter Simon Moore. There is a book with the same title written by Louis L'Amour, an American author of Western novels, but this movie is not based on that novel. The title is said to come from two verses in the Bible, 1 Peter 4:5 and Acts 10:42, which use the phrase "the living and the dead," substituting the more archaic term "quick," as in the "quick" of the fingernails, for the term "living." Moore wrote his script as an homage to the Spaghetti Westerns that emerged in the mid-1960s thanks to Italian filmmaker Sergio Leone. Without any explanation given in the movie, viewers have come up with two possibilities: (1) they're the result of burns from his revolver's gunpowder flash, or (2) Herod's goons stomped on his hands when they were beating him up at the beginning of the movie. Herod wins his round against the Kid (Leonardo DiCaprio), leaving Ellen and Cort (Russell Crowe) to face each other, with the winner facing Herod in the final round. When Ellen and Cort refuse to participate in their duel, Herod informs them that, should Ellen attempt to leave town, she will be shot, and if they refuse to fire on each other, they will both be shot. When they finally come face-to-face, the clock strikes 6:00 and, true to their word, neither of them pulls a gun. Herod gives them a countdown from 10 to fire or be fired on. As Herod counts down, Cort yells at Ellen to fire on him, but she waits for the last second before drawing her gun. Cort reacts and shoots her. Ellen grabs at her chest, blood begins spilling out, and she collapses to the ground. The doctor pronounces her dead, and her body is carried off. The final round is now between Cort and Herod. During the night, Ratsy (Raynor Scheine) torments Cort by beating him and slamming his right hand with the handle of a gun. When Cort and Herod come face-to-face the next morning at dawn and Herod sees Cort's injured right hand, he agrees to even the chances by drawing with his left hand. The clock handle changes to 6 AM, and the clock suddenly blows up before Herod can fire off a shot. More buildings start blowing up. From out of the wreckage, Ellen appears, and she and Cort kill off all of Herod's goons. Believing Ellen to be dead, Herod asks who she is, and Ellen tosses her father's Marshal badge at his feet. The blind boy (Jerry Swindall) can be seen pouring out the last drops of red ink from a bottle. In a flashback, it is shown how Herod forced little Ellen to shoot out the rope being used to hang her father (Gary Sinise), but Ellen ended up shooting him in the head because she had poor aim and the pistol was too heavy and killing her own father. Realizing just who Ellen really is, Herod challenges Ellen to draw. She draws, fires, and misses him, but Herod hits her in the shoulder. Ellen fires again and kills him. In the final scene, Ellen walks over to Herod's body, picks up her father's badge, and tosses it to Cort. "The law's come back to town," she tells him. She then gets on her horse and rides out of town while all the townsfolk cheer her. Three 1960s westerns directed by Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood are considered classics. They include Per un pugno di dollari (1964) (A Fistful of Dollars) (1964), Per qualche dollaro in più (1965) (For a Few Dollars More) (1965), and Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (1966) (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) (1966). C'era una volta il West (1968) (Once Upon a Time in the West) (1968) is another typical spaghetti western directed by Leone (but without Eastwood). Eastwood went on to make more westerns that are often compared to The Quick and the Dead, including High Plains Drifter (1973) (1973) and Unforgiven (1992) (1992). There are very few movies that feature female gunfighters, probably because there were so few female gunfighters in the Old West. Perhaps most famous was sharpshooter Annie Oakley (real name Phoebe Ann Moses) [1860-1926], whose sharpshooting landed her a role as an exhibition shooter in Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show. Her character, often paired with Buffalo Bill, shows up in several westerns, but there are two movies that mainly headline Oakley: Annie Oakley (1935) (1935) and Annie Get Your Gun (1950) (1950). Although an army scout, not a sharpshooter, Calamity Jane (real name Martha Jane Canary) [1852-1903] also is featured in the title role in Calamity Jane (1953) (1953). Two other women whose names figure in the Old West include Belle Starr (real name Myra Maybelle Shirley Reed Starr) [1848-1889] and Cattle Kate (real name Ellen Liddy Watson) [1861-1889]. Belle Starr is featured in the title role in Belle Starr (1980) (1980) as well as other movies (see list here). There are no movies listed that feature Cattle Kate. Although fictional, Cat Ballou (1965) (1965) features a woman gunfighter who teams up with an aging gunfighter to avenge her father's death. In Hannie Caulder (1971) (1971), a woman gunfighter attempts to avenge her husband's murder. Actress Dale Evans also was pretty handy with her gun when riding with her cowboy husband Roy Rogers in numerous movies of the 1940s and 50s. The R-rated version of Sam Raimi's western misses out the infamous sex scene between Russell Crowe and Sharon Stone that can be seen in nearly all international versions of this movie. It's a LeMat 1861 revolver. The LeMat was a uniquely-engineered pistol at that time: it was black powder meaning it had no cartridges (common at the time) and the cylinder surrounded a 16-gauge shotgun barrel. More info here.
