Poker legend Phil Ivey stung for $13 million swindle

ONE of gambling’s most elaborate stings has become one of the most famous poker players in the world’s moment of shame. If you’ve never heard of Phil Ivey, he’s poker’s equivalent of Roger Federer: incredibly successful, incredibly rich and incredibly cool.He was given the nickname “The Phenom” in 2002 after winning three World Series of Poker bracelets - basically the equivalent of a tennis grand slam - and built a reputation as one of the best players in the world while amassing more than $30 million in winnings. 바카라사이트

“Imagine the person who the coolest people in the world think is the coolest most intimidating mysterious person that they know who they all want to hang out with. And that’s Phil Ivey,” author Chad Millman described Ivey, on an ESPN podcast.

“He’s that good. You know? It’s all the cliches, he is the Michael Jordan of poker, he was the Tiger Woods of poker.”But for the past five years, Ivey has been fighting to clear his name after being caught swindling a casino out of $13 million. In 2012, Ivey paired with mysterious Chinese woman Cheung Yin “Kelly” Sun - described as the “most dangerous advantage player in the world” - to amass eight figures in winnings in a game called baccarat in a matter of days.

Ivey and Sun used a technique known as “edge sorting” to gain an unfair advantage while gambling at the Crockfords casino in London’s posh Mayfair district. They did not actually touch the cards being dealt, but convinced the dealer to arrange the cards a certain way that allowed them to determine, in some cases, which cards were being dealt, allowing them to bet accordingly. They were an incredible duo.“Kelly had found someone who could take her play way beyond simply getting revenge on MGM, someone who could launch her into a whole new universe of making money at casinos ESPN’s Rose Eveleth said. “And Phil had found someone who could do something that even the best poker player in the world, couldn’t.”But Crockfords cried foul and refused to pay the winnings, leading Ivey to pursue his claim in court. But after a long-running case, the British Supreme Court upheld a lower-court ruling that Ivey had used illegitimate means.
