After a bloody bank robbery in New Mexico, Henry's gang heads to the borders for a safe split of the loot, while a competent bounty hunter, Josiah, is after them. Soon, the bandits will find the perfect hideout to spend the night, unfortunately, however, there lives the family of pastor George Tildon, a religious man who lives by the word of God. Inevitably, this is going to be one very long night, and as the tension keeps boiling over, no secret will remain hidden under the light of the morning sun.
When outlaws on the lam invade the home of an unsuspecting, seemingly innocent, frontier family to hide out for the night, an unexpected game of cat and mouse ensues, leading to seduction, role reversal, and ultimately, bloody revenge.
Spoiler alert-it sucks. Do something else with 2 hrs, please. The only type of individual I could see enjoying this is one of those sad, pathetic atheists who seems obsessed with hating Christians. They would love the crosses posted everywhere at the homestead where the disgusting, incestuous preacher and his miserable family live. The whole film seemed like it fell out of some silly, angry 18 year old's head. I wish I could think of at least one worthwhile element of the train wreck, but it's just not there.I generally like westerns, but this was something else.If you like slash flicks with the blood spatter overdone, well, there's that.
I see a lot of movies, but not a lot that were made for under a million dollars like this one. I am a huge fan of Outlaws and Angels. While on the surface, it could seem like someone doing a Tarantino (who is one of my all time favorite directors,) nothing could be further. The movie was written long before Quentin hatched Hateful 8 and the movie certainly had nothing to do with Django.
JT Mollner took his notes from Polanski and Peckinpah. There is tons of violence in the movie, but there is not tons of gratuitous violence. It was done in a brutal and unfamiliar way, but that is because that is the way it happened on the frontier when it was the wild west. While we don't say "Curly Wolf," "Bag of nails," or "Lick finger" now....they did back then and that is why the dialogue was so foreign to some.
The subject matters while challenging were lifted from actuality as opposed to trying to play to a viewer or a reviewer. I say the movie is a masterpiece and as time goes by it will be a standard that is referred back to time and time again. In my mind it is a must see.
The cast is simply off the charts. Francesca Eastwood gave an Oscar worthy performance in her first major role and Chad Michael Murray playing so off type was nothing short of spectacular.
The attention to detail, the lens packages, shooting on 2-perf....everything about this movie was master craftsmanship. Outlaws and Angels isn’t perfect — Murray mumbles into his beard way too much — but Eastwood sure is at ease with a cowboy hat and revolver. Clearly, she’s studied with the best.
