This activated inflammatory response causes different immunological cells, such as the macrophage, to migrate to the damaged muscle tissue, consequently facilitating muscle cell repair and growth. Macrophages are versatile immune cells that play many roles. As cellular scavengers, they clear the body of damaged cells and additional debris so when muscle tissue is damaged by exercise, the macrophage eliminates cell damage. Although the macrophage's housecleaning capabilities do not notably contribute to muscle tissue growth, the macrophage's ability to secrete a wide array of signaling molecules known as cytokines notably contributes to muscle growth. These cytokines are small protein molecules that typically signal and activate other immune cells, but function during muscle damage as powerful anabolic agents that drive muscle growth. Cytokines not only contribute to growth but intense exercise appears to augment their muscle building capabilities. Cytokine known as interleukin is substantially increased after eccentric resistance exercise, and this effect was dependent on tissue damage. This increase in interleukin is important because interleukin potently increases muscle protein synthesis and reduces protein degradation, yielding greater levels of protein within the muscle cell, which leads to greater size and strength.
