About This Game

Once upon a time, in a small, unremarkable village, there was a timid little boy who didn't have any friends. One day, while playing alone in his bedroom, he was rudely interrupted by a family of dirty rats. Chasing them out of his room, the little boy suddenly found himself lost in a vast, mysterious forest, where he happened upon a magical crown that imbued him with the power to command. The little boy -- with his newfound companions Liam, Verde, and Howser the Bull Knight at his side -- has (rather surprisingly) become the leader of the small, down-on-its-luck kingdom of Alpoko.

With his newfound powers of persuasion, the little boy began working to raise Alpoko from the depths of obscurity and poverty into the dizzying heights of absolute power and prosperity. With Howser offering effective advice and unrestrained ambition, and the citizens of Alpoko sharing his grandiose plans (whether they want to or not), the little boy marches ever onward to his ultimate goal of World Domination!

Initially released for Wii to rave reviews, this cult classic real-time strategy game juxtaposes cutesy fairytale visuals with some decidedly adult cynicism for a zany, irreverent adventure to build, enhance, and maintain a mystical, magical kingdom. Making its way to PC for the first time, this edition of the game remains faithful to the Wii original, but brings all its charming, sassy fun to a new audience. Can you keep Alpoko safe from the Onii and help our little hero become king of the whole world?

Key Features:

  • Play an enhanced HD port of the fan-favorite Wii version of the game, with all the original storybook-style art, content, and gameplay present and accounted for.
  • Play in English, French, Italian, German, or Spanish, to ensure that most of the Western world can understand your claim over their land (Note: Game also contains Japanese text, but in order for the Japanese text to display properly the Windows OS must be set to Japanese).
  • Have your loyal subjects dig for treasure, erect buildings, and break obstacles to access new areas -- all in the name of bettering your kingdom.
  • Interact with unique NPCs who have individual likes, dislikes, and personal memories which evolve based on their daily experiences.
  • Take a variety of quests to help increase your reputation and further the noble name of Alpoko.
  • Unite the surrounding rival kingdoms under your flag to become the best monarch in all the land (and ultimately, the one who rules over all the land!).

I played this game as a kid and I can't believe it's on Steam now! I'm having just as much of a blast now as an adult as I did as a kid.

This game is truly a gem. If you like/d Pikmin, this game is very similar while also being unique enough that it doesn't feel like a clone. Made by the creator of Harvest Moon, it's a pseudo-city builder slash adventure RTS game in which you control a young King. Your goal is to expand your Kingdom and take over the world by throwing your subjects (literally) at monsters, in order to clear the area so you can expand there.

The graphics are very childish and cartoon-y, but definitely not unpleasant. For almost a decade old game, it looks nice, even on low settings.

There's a surprising amount of fun to be had in the game, and it's difficult to tear yourself away once you've gotten into the groove of throwing and exploring. It's also shockingly challenging at some parts and requires a good deal of thinking for some boss battles.

Story: 7/10
The story is admittedly rather simple, but the dialogue is funny and there's lots of humor and parody.

Graphics: 8/10
With the upgraded gfx options, the game looks great. The artistic direction is fantastic and very endearing.

Gameplay: 8/10
The core gameplay is great. My only issue is with the pointer controls - for reference, I'm using an Xbox 360 controller. You can use the left trigger to target specific enemies, but even then, often times your people will go flying in the wrong direction. It's really annoying, but not a deal breaker imo; you just need to be careful with your aim. Otherwise, the gameplay is very fun and has a hidden amount of depth in terms of classes and strategy.

Audio: 10/10
The music in this game is great and suits the art style perfectly. Seriously, this game has a wonderful OST.

Overall: 8/10
If you like Pikmin and similar RTS games, and don't mind the cartoonish graphics, I highly recommend Little King's Story, especially with the upgraded port.. OWWWWWWWWWW MY EARS!!!!!!!! audio doesnt work half the time on boot up, and when it does, it has a sudden SCREECH into my headphones, damn near made me deaf. I loved this game back in the day and REALLY wanted to see it work but none of the reddit or steam community fixes have worked for me, i give up. Dont waste your time, BTW this is post feb 2017 patch.. Do you like pikmin? Do you like Kingdom building games? If yes, play this. There are some running and crashing issues I've run into, but it is worth playing in spite of it.. First off, most issues seem to be known by the people making this port, and it's in work. Since it can be made to work as well as the Wii version, I have to recommend it since I recommend the Wii version.

The music in the game is light hearted and inspiring. This was in fact what made me fall in love with it in the first place. When the lone ranger theme started playing for the first miniboss, I couldn't help but laugh.

The character design fits the music. Every character has character. You can even tell the townsfolk apart, even in the same job at times. I'm certain you will get to the point where you can start putting names to faces like I did!

The writing feels like it was made to entertain children, but there are enough jokes in there for mature audiences to keep everyone involved.

The controls are where I feel it's lacking the most. Even the controller controls have their flaws. I heard the keyboard controls are worse, but I can't speak for them. The controller plays on the joystick for best results, but the aiming seems to lock onto only one of 8 directions. You cannot fine tune your aim. This is a problem that follows from the original game. However when targetting enemies, it's better, but it's difficult to actually select different targets. You usually just get the closest to you.

**Edit: After a little bit of research the controls are actually true to the original I've found. The original on the Wii did not use the wiimote as a pointer device, nor did it allow you to move in more than 8 directions. I have contacted XSeed about this, and they have said that mouse controls would have required a complete rework of the game, and won't be in. Still if you enjoyed the original, you should enjoy this just as much. Likely anyone saying otherwise about the controls does not remember the original the way it really was.**

The sound also has a known issue if you have Windows set to anything other than Stereo. It will pop badly. This isn't your headset or speakers dying, it's just a problem. Before you play go into Windows Control Panel > Sound and set your primary sound source to Stereo. Hopefully this is fixed in a patch soon.

There is also an option for bloom in the starup config. If you don't like the bloom, which can make things a little blurry at times, turn it off. It's the option called "Post Effect." I personally like it, as I remember it being in the original, and gives you a kind of watery eyes tired look near the end of the day. You are a kid after all, it is past your bedtime.

Finally, there's a big stink about the 60FPS option being very buggy. I have not had a chance to try it, but there is a clear warning not to use it in the config menu. Right now use it at your own risk. Many animations in the game, as well as the gameplay, are currently tied to the framerate. This might be fixed in the future, but what it means now is things will get out of sync in cutscenes, and the game will run fast, and choppy at times. This is not the fault of XSeed, as it was a design choice from the original developer. I don't know if it can be fixed.

In short, this game runs on PC nearly as well as the original Wii. The graphics have been upgraded, and it can be run on higher resolution. Just don't use the 60 fps, make sure Windows is set to stereo sound, and set the config in the beginning the way that's best for you and you'll enjoy it as much as I do. If you need one of these other options like 60 fps, then I recommend waiting a while before buying it, as it may be coming.. Honestly, ignore these negative comments, they're ridiculing such a great game.

Port Review:

I don't honestly see anything wrong with the port; the controls are fine, i've adapted to them really quickly. The nostalgia value is ridiculous, even though the game may be at 30 fps, it's still play able. I'd like it if they added an option to change the controls though, it would make the game less of a struggle in my opinion. Overall the port is fine and I'm sure they'll eventually update the game to fix these issues.

Story Review:

The story is what makes this game, every character is unique, the gameplay, the mechanics, everything about this game is just perfect in my eyes. I adore Little King's Story so much and I wish people could see through these negative comments about the port because personally, the game shouldn't be reviewed on a port but the game itself.

Just give it a try. Don't like it? refund it. Simple as can be.
. Even with Durante's fix this port is still trash. The game itself is mediocre at best and tedious at worst. Just play Overlord instead. New update: no technical issues. controls fixed, graphics and framerate fixed, a bunch of new superfluous graphics options for this 10 year old game. Thanks, Durante! Absolutely nothing but positive now.

Now to the game itself. I think it still looks pretty. They went for a style that suited the technology, that's clean and simple and looks great when scaled up. It certainly isn't the BEST looking game but it still looks nice.

The cutesy aesthetic mixes with a bit of dark humour and some silly wordplay. (Having the priest of the Sect of Soup say "Ramen" instead of "Amen" is just brilliant in my opinion.)

The gameplay is rather straightforward, and I've already found 3 bosses within 2 hours of play. It definitely feels easygoing overall (before I realized when you die there's no checkpoints and you revert to your last save, save often) It's a lot more pikmin than RTS so far.

If I run into anymore issues I'll definitely update this but with a GTX970 I can't say I have too many complaints about the functionality (obviously kind of overkill for a wii port, but it's not like I can test it with anything less.) This is my first time playing this game and I'm enjoying it immensely.

If you're on the fence maybe wait for a few patches or a sale and try it out, I think the PC lacks games like this and it very much has a Nintendo Wii Hidden Gem flare. I would love to see more games like this on the platform.. I was very weary about purchasing this due to the reviews. I loved this game back when it came out on the Nintendo Wii. It is just as fun as when I played it back then. I have not had any issues while playing. I have not tried 60fps since it says not recommended. But I've clocked about 2 hours now and the game has not had any issues. I recommend playing it and if for some reason you have issues just return it before your time limit runs out.. I have a pretty good computer, but it was struggling. I had to set a 30fps limit, and turned off the post effect option. Afer I did that it ran smoothly.

Still a really good game.. I believe that after the update of 02/02/2017, the game no longer is difficult to like. I loved playing this on the Wii but when I bought it initially on the Pc, I was dissapointed with frame drops and audio issues, those problems are now solved and I can happily recommend this game.
